    • A commutation assembly mechanically commutates an electric motor. It includes a plurality of distinct electrical contacts forming a circular surface around a motor shaft. At least some of the electrical contacts are electrically coupled to distinct coils within the motor. The assembly further includes a conductive flexible ring and an arm with two rollers. The conductive flexible ring has a circumference that is less than the circumference of the circular surface. In use, the arm is rigidly attached to the motor shaft and has a roller disposed at a distal end for forcing an electrical connection between the flexible ring and specific electrical contacts during rotation of the arm. The electrical connection causes at least one of the distinct coils to be selectively energized.

    • A plane commutator includes a plurality of commutator segments made of carbon compound, a resinous boss member and a plurality of metal base plates. The plurality of the commutator segments forms a disk-like commutator surface at an end thereof and a base portion at the other end. The resinous base member is disposed in contact with the base portion to support the plurality of commutator segments. Each commutator segment has a projection extending from the base portion, and each base plate has an expansible through hole fitted to the projection. Each projection includes metal powder at portion in contact with the through hole to provide good electrical connection.

    • A planar carbon segment commutator includes a commutator base of insulating material. The base has a rotational axis and front and rear surfaces extending, at least in part, transversely to the rotational axis. A plurality of apertures extends through the base. The commutator also includes a plurality of commutator terminals, each terminal having a terminal portion and a contact portion. Each contact portion extends through one of the apertures and is bent to lie against or in close proximity to the front surface of the base. Each terminal portion has two cutting edges for cutting insulation on a connector portion of a winding and a slot which, in use, straddles and grips the connector portion. The commutator also includes a plurality of carbon segments formed on the front surface of the base and over the contact portions, respectively, of the terminals and a housing having a plurality of housing recesses for receiving the terminal portions.

    • Commutators for electro-dynamic machines such as electric motors comprise a cylindrical shell of insulated commutators bars, each of which has an outer layer with tangs extending from the outer layer and an inner layer with anchoring tabs extending therefrom. The commutating bars are typically produced from two strips of copper or other conductive metal. The inner layer may be formed of a thinner but stronger material, even of a non-conductive material, but is normally preferable to use two strips of copper to facilitate fusion of the materials together. The first strip, which is typically somewhat thicker than the second, is formed by punching so that partially formed tangs extend laterally from the side of the strip. The second strip is formed in a similar process to provide anchoring tabs extending from the sides of the second strip. These commutators can be produced economically and efficiently and can be adapted to a wide variety of applications and requirements.

    • A disc-type commutator is mounted on a rear end surface of an armature of an electrical rotating machine. Plural commutator segments are radially arranged around a rotating shaft, separated from one another by radially extending commutator gaps. A width of the commutator gap is gradually widened along a radial direction of the commutator, so that foreign particles, such as swarfs or brush dusts, entered in the commutator gap are removed by a centrifugal force generated in rotation of the armature. Further, the width of the commutator gap may be gradually widened along its depth direction so that the width becomes wider at its open end that at its closed end.

    • A planar carbon segment commutator assembly made by forming an annular conductor substrate with an annular front projection extending integrally and axially from a front surface of the substrate. An annular carbon disk is formed on the conductor substrate by overmolding a carbon compound onto the front surface of the conductor substrate and around the annular front projection. The conductor substrate is mounted on an insulating hub. Electrically isolated, circumferentially-spaced commutator segments and corresponding mechanically interlocked conductor sections are formed by making radial cuts through the annular carbon disk and the metal substrate, respectively. According to one embodiment, each of the front projections has a greater cross-sectional area at a distal end than at a base end to mechanically lock the commutator segments onto the conductor sections.
