    • A mains power supply unit for the purpose of supplying consumers that are connected directly or by way of a voltage system converter to a direct voltage branch of a mains power supply unit comprises a buffer capacitor (C) that can be charged from the mains supply and that still supplies the direct voltage branch for a predetermined minimum period of time in the event of a failure or interruption in the mains supply. In such an event, the buffer capacitor (C) can be charged by way of a dedicated charging circuit (3) to a voltage (U2), which, regardless of the voltage fluctuations in the direct voltage branch, is substantially constant and corresponds in a substantial manner to the upper limit value of the direct voltage (U1) to which limit value the mains power supply unit is dimensioned. The buffer capacitor can be connected onto the direct voltage branch by way of a controlled switch (S) in the event of undervoltage in the mains supply or in the direct voltage branch.

    • A power conversion and energy management system preferably includes a controller, one or more standard modules, and a custom (or semi-custom) backplane. The backplane preferably accommodates one or more modules and uses the modules to control power quality and/or flow to one or more input and/or output connections. The standard modules are preferably power modules such as an inverter module, converter module, or grid connect module. In addition to accommodating the modules, the backplane can include system components other than power electronics. The backplane can, for example, include external connectors, disconnects, fusing, and so forth, for a given application. The backplane can further include internal DC and AC buses to interconnect the modules. The backplane can also include a communications module, a user interface, a socket for control firmware, and slots for accommodating the standard modules.

    • A switching power converter capable of operation in either Nonconversion, Stepdown, or Stepup Mode. Included is a parallel circuit of three serial connections of a first, a second and a third pair of switches. The junction between the first pair of switches is connected to an a.c. input terminal via an inductor, the junction between the second switch pair grounded, and the junction between the third switch pair connected to an a.c. output terminal via another inductor. The first and third switch pairs are driven at the frequency (e.g. 50 Hz) of an a.c. input voltage, and the second switch pair at a higher frequency (e.g. 20 kHz), in Nonconversion Mode; the first switch pair at the low frequency, and the second and third switch pairs at the high frequency, in Stepdown Mode; and the first and second switch pairs at the high frequency, and the third switch pair at low frequency, in Stepup Mode. The second switch pair is invariably driven at the high frequency.
