    • A process for the encapsulation of an electrical component (1) provided with at least one movable member (5), such as an overheating protection device, arranged externally of the component. The process comprises the steps of coating the component with a wax like material (2) in a molten state and in a sufficient amount to cover said at least one movable member (5), allowing said wax like material to solidify, incapsulating the wax coated component in an encapsulating material (3) having a solidifying temperature which is lower than the melting point of the wax like material and solidifying the encapsulating material.

    • A protected telecommunications terminal has signal conductors supported in a terminal housing, and a ground conductor positioned on the housing a small distance from the signal conductors. An electrically non-linear resistive material is located electrically between and in contact with the signal and ground conductors to provide over-voltage electrical protection to the terminal. The electrically non-linear resistive element is prepared from an electrically non-linear composition which comprises a polymeric component and a particulate filler. The composition has an initial resistivity at 25 DEG C of at least 10 ohm-cm, and is such that a standard device containing the composition has an initial breakdown voltage VSi, and after the standard device has been exposed to a standard impulse breakdown test, the device has a final breakdown voltage VSf which is from 0.7VSi to 1.3VSi. In addition, the composition in the device has a final resistivity rf at 25 DEG C of at least 10 ohm-cm.

    • A protector for protecting equipment, especially telephone equipment, against high voltage and/or current surges such as are caused by lightning in the vicinity of the equipment or the cables to which it is connected, comprises one or more overvoltage protectors (42, 58; 234, 236) mounted upon one face of an insulating support (18; 218). A generally planar contact member (62; 290, 312) mounted upon the support member has a ground contact member (90; 296) to make contact with a ground electrode (114; 310) in the equipment to be protected and with each overvoltage protector. A spacer (60; 320, 322) of fusible plastics material coupled thermally to the protection device melts when a sustained fault occurs. As the spacer melts, it permits an electrical connection between the contact member and the line to which the overvoltage protector is connected, effectively short-circuiting the line to ground. Overcurrent protection may be provided by means of a resistor (116) disposed in series with the line and located close to the plastics spacer so as to heat the spacer when an overcurrent occurs. In one case, the spacer comprises a film (60) interposed directly between a pair of contacts (40, 74') which serve to short-circuit the protector. In another case, the spacer comprises a limb (324) with relatively thin lateral projections (328, 338) which melt and shear. In both cases, the spacer preferably comprises high density, high molecular weight polyethylene.

    • A gas filled surge arrestor has at least one external air back-up gap comprising two spaced electrodes (7a,2 or 7a,3), one (7a) of which has at least one sharp edge or corner (9) adjacent the other electrode (2 or 3). The said one electrode (7a) is resiliently urged towards the other electrode and is coated with an insulating material (8) which prevents the two electrodes from being in direct contact and hence short circuiting. The arrangement is such that, although the sharp edge or corner (9) on said one electrode has a covering of insulating material, it is also separated from the other electrode by an air gap.
