    • An inductive coupler for power line communication includes a clamp type housing having two semicircular housing members having semicircular accommodating spaces formed therein, respectively, and hinge-engaged with each other so that the housing members are detachably coupled to a power line, one of the housing members having a connection terminal provided thereon; semicircular air-cores respectively accommodated in the semicircular accommodating spaces of the housing members of the housing; and wires wound on the semicircular air-cores, respectively, both end parts of the wire being connected to the connection terminal. The wires may be braided wires of plural strands, and metal thin films are adhesively fixed to inner walls of the semicircular housing members. Protective coating layers are formed on the wires to prevent changes with elapsed time and damage of the wires.

    • A phase-shifter apparatus which imposes a desired phase shift on an electromagnetic wave traveling through a waveguide, and divides the power in an output waveguide into two parts. The phase shifter apparatus includes a quarter-wave plate for changing the polarization of the linearly polarized wave to a circularly polarized wave, a rod of ferromagnetic material with a magnetic field for imposing a desired phase shift on the circularly polarized wave traveling through the rod, a quarter-wave plate for converting the circularly polarized wave to a linearly polarized wave, and a septum polarizer in the output wave guide for dividing the power. The output waveguide has the power divided between two ports, and independent phase shifts are imposed on the electromagnetic waves of each port.

    • Method and apparatus for reducing the loss in a microwave phase shifter by the use of circular TEn1 modes where n is greater than unity. The apparatus comprises: a ferrite filled circular waveguide having a diameter sufficiently large to propagate TE21, TE31 or higher modes; a solenoid adapted to be operated so as to provide a Faraday rotation on the electromagnetic fields propagated in the ferrite filled waveguide; and a pair of circular TE mode transducers or converters respectively coupled to each side of the circular waveguide where for example a circular TE11 mode rf input signal is fed into the first mode converter. The rf is transformed into a selected higher TEn1 mode where n>1 and where it is fed through the ferrite filled circular waveguide. A predetermined Faraday rotation of the TEn1 wave takes place with the second mode converter then transforming the TEn1 signal back to the input mode which then comprises an rf output shifted in phase with respect to the rf input, the phase shifted in phase with respect to the rf input, the phase shift being effected through the higher mode rf signal propagating in the ferrite filled circular waveguide.
