The invention provides a sealed battery, accommodating a battery element of flat shape, said battery element comprising a positive electrode and a negative electrode being laminated on each other with a separator interposed between them and being wound together, characterized in that a recessed portion is formed on a side surface of a battery case running in parallel to a flat surface of the battery element, said recessed portion having a central axis running in parallel to said flat surface and being positioned on a surface passing through the center of the battery case and running perpendicularly to the surface in parallel to the flat surface of the battery element.

    • The instant specification discloses a flat battery constituted by sealing a power generation element with: a case that works as one electrode terminal; a sealing plate that works as the other electrode terminal and has a flat central section projected outward and a flat peripheral section extending substantially parallel to the flat central section; and a gasket that insulates the case from the sealing plate, characterized in that the peripheral section of the sealing plate has an outer circumferential part being bent, or the case has a turned edge provided to make the peripheral section of the sealing plate fitted therein via the gasket and to partly press the gasket. The flat battery of the present invention having improvement in shape of the sealing plate and/or the case is sufficiently thin and exerts the effects of high leakage resistance and excellent mass productivity.

    • An electrochemical cell having a cell package made of a metallic material to allow the cell package to be sealed by welding, even when contaminated. The electrochemical cell further includes an electrode cell stack and a metallic cell package having a base portion and a lid portion which are welded to each other (peripheral seam) to define an enclosure. The cell package includes a first section for receiving the cell stack and a second section having an inlet port and a degassing port which communicate with the first section. The lid portion is welded to the base portion to form a weld seam located between the first and second sections to seal off the first section from the second section. The weld seam extends from the peripheral seam on a first side of the cell package to the peripheral seam on a second side of the cell package.
