    • A separator for shutting down current flow in a lithium or other alkali metal battery during a short circuit condition to prevent cell rupture. In one form, the separator comprises a layer of microporous polyethylene film, or other suitable microporous film having a melting point which is less than about 135° C., for providing good puncture resistance and for melting at a low temperature for increasing the margin of safety without significantly sacrificing performance. The separator also includes a layer of non-woven polypropylene, or other suitable non-woven material having a melting point which is at least about 10° C. higher than the melting point of the microporous film, to provide good strength and tear resistance so as to maintain physical integrity of the separator so that the short circuit condition is not worsened. In another form the separator comprises the combination of polyethylene on one of the battery electrodes, i.e. anode or cathode, and polypropylene on the other of the battery electrodes.

    • A primary lithium cell having a wound electrode assembly. The electrode assembly comprises an anode comprising lithium, a cathode comprising a manganese dioxide and an electrolyte permeable separator therebetween. The electrode assembly comprises a cathode sheet, an anode sheet and electrolyte permeable separator sheet therebetween. The sheets are wound into a spiral roll. An exposed edge of each revolution of the separator sheet is then heat treated, for example, by applying a heated platen thereto to mold said exposed edge into a continuous separator membrane. The continuous separator membrane, so formed, covers and seals off said edge of adjacent revolutions of the cathode sheet and thus provides electrical insulation therefor. The electrode assembly can then be inserted into the cell casing so that the continuous separator membrane abuts a surface of the casing and provides electrical insulation between the casing and the wound cathode sheet. This reduces the total amount of electrical insulation needed between the cell casing and wound electrodes and thereby frees up void volume which can be used for additional active material, for example, by making the anode and cathode sheets wider.

    • The present invention provides a lead acid storage battery keeping sufficient cycle life even under vibrating conditions. The lead acid storage battery of the present invention includes an assembly element that is obtained by alternately laying positive electrode plates, each positive electrode plate having an expanded grid, and negative electrode plates, each negative electrode plate being accommodated in a bag-like separator, one upon another. The separator is provided by folding a fine porous synthetic resin sheet and sealing left and right overlapping sides of the folded sheet to have a bag-like shape. The separator has a plurality of vertical ribs that are formed in parallel to one another on an outer surface of the separator and that are located in a central portion of the separator occupying a most part of its width. The separator further has small rib areas that extend along a length of the bag-like separator and that are arranged on left and right sides thereof. Each of the small rib areas includes a large number of small ribs that intersect a left or right side end of the positive electrode plate.
