An outer cathode region between the electrolyte (10) and the casing (18) contains sulphur, and an inner anode region in the electrolyte tube contains sodium. An alpha alumina lid (12) closes the tube (10) and holds a current collector (15). The cathode region is sealed by an annular metal element (23) which is thermocompression bonded about its inner periphery to the lid (12) and is welded about its outer periphery to the casing (18). A second annular metal element (26) '; thermocompression bonded to the lid (12) wholly inside tne first annular element (23) and is welded to the current collector. The metal elements (23, 26) are bonded to the lid (12) before the lid is glazed to the electrolyte tube (10) and before the first element (23) is welded to the casing (18).

摘要： A battery jar cover and a system for welding the battery jar cover onto a battery jar with the battery elements and terminal post in position within the jar and with the cover placed in position. The battery jar cover (10) has a guide device (34) comprising posts (36) and flanges (38) depending from the bottom thereof and positioned so as to extend about at least predetermined portions of the periphery of the cover and inwardly from the sides thereof. The guide device is shaped so that it extends downwardly from the bottom of the cover a greater degree adjacent the corners and to a lesser degree adjacent the central position of each side. The system includes a welding apparatus (100) that includes a deck assembly (114), a carriage assembly (116) and a welding head assembly (118). The apparatus further employs separate heating and clamping mechanisms (444), (420) extending on each side of the jar so that the cover does not have to be lifted completely off the jar during welding. This structure greatly reduces the time required to change over from one size to another thereby increasing the per unit processing capacity of the device. Further, in order that a variety of jar sizes be rapidly handled, two of the heating and clamping mechanisms are relatively long while the other two are relatively short and equal to the constant width dimension of batteries. The apparatus accomplishes the loading operation automatically, and by not removing the cover fully from the jar. better and more accurate welds are produced.

The apparatus includes a weld head assembly (108) having a plurality of elongate clamp bars (486) engageable with the sides of the battery jar (54) to retain the jar in a stationary position and, a pick-up assembly (568) engageable with the cover (10) to raise the cover (10) relative to the jar (54) to permit insertion of elongate heater bars (532) between opposed complementary welding surfaces on the cover (10) and jar (54) to directly heat the welding surfaces and to lower the cover (10) after removal of the heater bars (532) to bring the heated welding surfaces together to effect a joint therebetween. The cover (10) has a downwardly depending guide structure (112) engageable with the inner surface of the jar (54) and travel of the pick-up assembly (568) is controlled by switches which limit separation of the pre-assembled cover (10) and jar (54) so as to maintain the engagement between the guide structure (112) and the inner surface of the jar (54) during both the heating and subsequent joining stages. In this way the initial alignment of the pre-assembled cover (10) and jar (54) is maintained throughout the welding operation. The weld head assembly (108) is part of a deck assembly (104) which includes a transfer carriage (106) for sequentially moving the pre-assembled cover (10) and jar (54) from a load station to the weld head assembly (108) and on to an unload station for removing the assembled battery case having the cover (10) welded to the jar (54).
