    • The present invention 10 has two components that provide the signal that is representative of the guitar sound, a primary pickup device 12 and a secondary pickup device 52. The primary device is the piezoelectric pickup 12 that is situated between the strings 18 beneath the saddle 14 of a stringed instrument 16. The primary device 12 is designed to detect the bulk of the sound as well as the tonal nuances. The primary device does not provide ambience. The secondary device 52 as used in one embodiment of the present invention makes use of the physically induced charge modulation properties along both the longitudinal and transverse axis of the interconnecting coax cable 52 that runs from the primary pickup 12 to the impedance changing preamplifier 36. This cable can simulate the ambience that could otherwise be generated from discrete microphones or reverberation devices. An optional pair of pickups 26 may be disposed outside the strings 18. Also, a compressible gasket 34 may be placed between the pickup 12 and saddle 14 and the pickup 12 and the bridge 22 to prevent air gaps thereinbetween.

    • A musical instrument adapted for string play comprises at least an elongated unitary neck and solid body, one or more support arms releasably or pivotally secured to the unitary neck and body, and one or more side panels releasably or pivotally secured to a support arm. A string tensioning system for tuning the instrument is secured to and spaced apart from the underside of the body portion and is operated in conjunction with a string-path reverser affixed to the proximal end of the body portion. The string-path reverser redirects the strings from the playing surface on the top of the body portion to the tensioning system underneath. Side panels are employed that approximate portions of the sides of the body of a conventional acoustic instrument, and connective means are employed that enable rapid assembly (or expansion) of the instrument for playing and rapid disassembly (or contraction). The components are readily arranged in a small carrying case for storage and transit. When assembled (or expanded) the subject instrument feels and responds like a conventional acoustic instrument. Guitar embodiments of the present invention are described. Acoustoelectric transduction is provided to convert the string vibrations to electrical signals, which are amplified. Electronic signal processing means are employed whereby the effects of the multi-resonant nature of the large hollow body of a conventional acoustic instrument are approximated. Input circuits are provided that enable sounds from other devices such as tape or digital recorders to be superposed with those of the instrument. Output circuits provide signals suitable for amplifier/loudspeaker and for headphone presentation. The latter facilitates “silent” practice. An electronic metronome and an electronic tuning aid are incorporated, and signal processing means are provided whereby the sound heard by a headphone wearing player will appear to emanate directly from the instrument.

    • Guitar pickups are provided herein comprising an upper bobbin, a ferromagnetic steel plate and a lower bobbin, stacked on top of each other, oriented longitudinally and laterally substantially the same, and held together by ferromagnetic screws. An upper coil is wounded around a middle section of the upper bobbin, and a lower coil is wounded in an opposite manner around a middle section of the lower bobbin, whereby the upper and lower coils are connected in series. The upper and lower bobbins, and steel plate each include a plurality of coaxial apertures to receive corresponding permanent magnetic pole pieces that extend from the upper bobbin to the lower bobbin. The upper and lower bobbins include additional apertures to receive ferromagnetic cylinders to selectively change the tonal characteristics of the guitar. The pickups may include a pair of ferromagnetic plates attached to the longitudinal sides of the lower bobbin that extend upwards to about the middle of the upper coil. These ferromagnetic plates concentrate the electromagnetic fields around the coils. A guitar in combination with these pickups is provided herein.
