    • In a method for measuring or monitoring throughout any predetermined period the percentage value rating of a self-assessed variable in relation to one or more test individuals, for example each individual's feeling of well-being or quality of life rating during the course of medical treatment, each test individual is supplied with a record card (10) that has a black surface (12) overprinted with a number of separate light silver coloured squares (14) composed of opaque material that can be removed selectively by scraping or scratching. At the end of each day, the test individual scratches away at least part of the opaque silver material of a relevant square (14) to expose the darker underlying area to an extent that is considered to be visually representative of how well or unwell that individual has felt on average during that day. The daily results are recorded on the silver coloured recording squares in a predetermined order and testing is continued for a predetermined period, e.g. 28 days. At the end of that time, the card (10) is processed using an image scanning device (25) connected to a computer system that processes the digitised data generated to measure the proportion or percentage amount of each silver recording square that has been removed, the output being provided in a form selectable by the user. The system described may be adapted for measuring or monitoring other intangible variables or characteristics that are quantifiable in terms of a percentage value rating determined by personal assessment of a test individual.

    • Didactic device for providing entertainment and amusement while serving as an educational teaching aid, such as a doll having the simulated capability of sight and voice. The doll has the appearance of a human being and is provided with an optical image processing system incorporated therewithin. The image processing system includes an imager chip, a matrix memory in which signal data output from the imager chip is stored, and a data processor having an object recognition comparator, and is combined with a speech synthesis system. The data precessor takes the form of a microprocessor and includes a storage memory in which firmware in the form of data signatures of a plurality of object configurations is retained. Thus, the doll is enabled to identify objects as depicted on flash cards having different indicia which may be symbols, shapes, and/or legends provided thereon. When a particular flash card is held up before the image processing system as incorporated into the doll, the imager thereof views the object depicted by the flash card and provides a signal data output indicative of the appearance of the object. Thus, the doll has the capability of identifying the object via the recognition comparator of the microprocessor which analyses the signal data output of the imager with the data signatures provided by the memory of the microprocessor. Objet identification may then be audibly vocalized by the doll via the speech synthesizer such that the doll names the object depicted on the flash card.

    • In a system and method for controlling access to an electronic data system, either of first and second portable electronic data recording means (23, 25) may contain recorded information. A user is only allowed access to the recorded information in at least one, when both have been detected by a reading device (13, 15, 19, 21). The first data recording means provides prompts for data input and receives data in response to the prompts. The second data recording means records the same data as the first. The data from the first data recording means (23) is pre-processed by a pre-processor (33) and then finally processed by a processor (35). The first and second data recording means (23, 25, 27, 29) are adapted such that the data recorded by the second can be independently updated and the new data then acquired by the first.

    • A process for using and teaching mathematical basic operations in an optionally chosen number system, as well as to the electronic apparatus for the realization of said process which contains a memory, display with screens and keys. The essence according to the invention lies in that the person performing the operation is setting the task in form of letters, while during the time of solving the task always the same number is co-ordinated to one certain letter, the tasks figuring in form of letters is displayed on the screen. Thereafter the result of the given operation is also displayed in form of letters, thereafter, the numerical values considered as corresponding to the single letters by the person trying to solve the task are displayed on the place corresponding to the local value of the given letters by pressing the proper key. In case of an incorrect choice of letter and digit, i.e. if a mathematically impossible result is obtained, the error is indicated for the person performing the operation. A further essence of the invention lies in that the electronic apparatus contains a central microprocessor unit, one input channel each of which is connected to a fixed and random memory, to the letter input and displaying unit, the unit for setting the selected number system, for the input of signs of operation and equality, to the unit for correction of the data input, as well as to the cancelling unit. The output channels each of the microprocessor is connected to the fixed and random memory, the letter input and display unit, the unit for the input, and display of digits, as well as to the unit displaying the erroneous result and the unit for the display of the correct result.
