    • An apparatus (22) for selectively discriminating vegetation or plant matter (28) comprises a light emitting means (24), a light sensing means (30) and a distance sensing means (34). The light emitting means generates a beam of light (26) that can be directed onto plants or plant matter moving relative to the apparatus. The light sensing means senses light transmitted from said light emitting means and reflected from the plants or plant matter, and generates a reflection signal in response to the sensing of the reflected light. The distance sensing means senses the relative distance moved and generates a distance signal. A processing means (32) is operatively connected to the light sensing means and the distance sensing means to combine the reflection signal and distance signal to discriminate different types of plants or plant matter.

    • The invention is a process of counting poker chips or similar tokens used in casino games or similar games and entertainment, which counts the chips in the columns of standard poker-chip trays by sending an ultrasonic (or other measurable energy) wave-front down the given column and measuring the time until an echo is received. If the length of the column is known, and the thickness of the standard poker chip is known, and the speed of sound is known, then the number of chips in the given column is determined by subtracting the current actually measured wave-front echo time from the empty column wave-front echo time and dividing by the amount of time the ultrasonic wave-front takes to traverse one chip-thickness.

    • An optical navigation sensor apparatus for an optical mouse includes an optical navigation sensor having an electronic chip, an aperture plate and an imaging lens integrated into a single package. The imaging lens includes a lens housing surrounding the aperture and providing a barrier to the entry of foreign matter into the aperture. In one form, the optical navigation sensor also includes a light emitting diode (LED) for illuminating a small area of a surface under the sensor and generating a reflected image that is detected by the electronic chip. In a sensor having an integral LED, an integral collimating lens is included for receiving light from the LED and focusing the light from the LED on the surface to be illuminated. The collimating lens is incorporated into a lens housing surrounding the LED and protecting the LED from exposure to foreign material.

    • An active safety barrier circuit is disposable in series with an electrical conductor at a barrier between an adverse environment and an outside environment for passing an analog signal over the electrical conductor across the barrier while preventing potentially dangerous electrical threats from entering the adverse environment over the electrical conductor. The safety barrier circuit comprises: an analog-to-digital converter circuit for converting sequential time samples of the analog signal to a train of electrical digitally coded words which are output sequentially from the analog-to-digital converter circuit; an optical isolator for converting the electrical digitally coded words into light signals which are passed across an electrically non-conductive barrier which prevents potentially dangerous electrical threats from entering the adverse environment over the electrical conductor, and for reconverting the light signals back into the electrical digitally coded words after crossing the non-conductive barrier, the reconverted electrical digitally coded words being output sequentially from the optical isolator; and a digital-to-analog converter circuit for reconstructing the analog signal from the reconverted electrical digitally coded words being received sequentially from the optical isolator without affecting substantially the accuracy thereof.
