    • A transaction execution system is provided in which key initiated transaction requests ataternnnal remote from and in communication with a host data processing system are processed at the terminal under the selective control of the host Each active transaction key at the terminal keyboard is assigned one of three different states by a financial institution table 100. The table 100 provides keyboard customization by selecting one of a plurality of different groups of key states for the different keys arrived at by combining the key states in a custom key set table 106 with the states in a base key set table 104 in response to information from a credit card entered by a consumer. Transactions requested by keys assigned an active, standard state are processed at the terminal without further data input being required of the consumer. Transactions requested by keys having an active, data entry state are also handled within the terminal and with the additional consumer entered data required to complete the transaction being requested by and received by the terminal using sets of messages previously stored in the terminal by the host data processing system. Transactions designated by an interactive key state take place within and involve interactive communication between both the terminal and the host, enabling the responses and other communications generated by the host in connection with a transaction for a particular customer to be customized and providing for greater and more varied transactions including such things as bill paying in which funds are transferred between accounts in the host. Message storage within the terminal and communication of messages to the terminal from the host are greatly simplified by storage of segments of messages at the terminal FrequentlY repeateD phrases can then be incorporated into a message as it is readied for display at the terminal by storing the phrases as segments and thereafter simply identifying them in message definitions communicated to the terminal from the host or stored at the terminal.

    • 0 in a stop-and-display station (10) in document-handling equipment wherein a document (14) in a track (12) is stopped and viewed through a transparent first wall (20), where- against it is supported by a non-transparent second wall (22), a reflective photosensor assembly (24) is angled relative to the back wall such that a ligh beam (56) from a light-emitting diode (42) cannot be specularly reflected onto a phototransistor (44) either from a document (14) or from the inner surface of the transparent first wall (20). The phototransistor (44) intercepts a portion of the scatter-reflected light (60) from the document (14). The light from the light-emitting diode (42) is modulated with a predetermined frequency, and the output signal from the phototransistor (44) is filtered by a band-pass filter (68) before threshold detection (70) to provide indication of the presence of a document (14). A turn-off delay circuit (72) prevents loss of indication of the presence of a document unless signals from the phototransistor (44) have been absent for longer than a predetermined period. The apparatus resists false alarms of the presence of a document in consequence of extraneous light and extraneous reflections. The turn-off delay circuit (72) prevents marks on the back face of the document (14) inadvertently causing loss of signal (74) indicative of document (14) presence.

    • An apparatus for sorting mail is disclosed. In the apparatus, a readout section (58) reads out destination data on mail. A discriminating section (91) discriminates the destination data on the basis of the result of readout by the readout section (58). A plurality of coding desks (8 1 , 8 2 ... ) each include a display section for displaying the readout result by the readout section (58) when the discriminating section (91) fails to discriminate the destination data, and a keyboard for enabling the destination data corresponding to the contents of display by the display section to be input. The plurality of coding desks (8 1 , 82 ... ) are assigned to regions or cities. A distributing section (9) distributes the readout result by the readout section (58) to coding desks (8 1 , 8 2 , ...) corresponding to regions or cities as recognized from part of the address data when the discriminating section (91) fails to discriminate the destination data. A sorting data assigning section (55) assigns to the mail the sorting data according to the result of discriminating operation by the discriminating section or the destination data by the keyboards of the coding desks (8 1 , 82, ...). A sorting/collecting section sorts and collects the mail into predetermined sorting sections according to the sorting data applied by the sorting data assigning section (55).

    • A wireless communication system (100) for communicating between a host system (300) and a stand-alone device (200) through an electromagnetic coupling medium (110) is disclosed. The communication system (100) has the capabilities of bi-directional data communications between the host (300) and the stand-alone device (200) and of powering the coupling medium (110) from the host (300). The electromagnetic medium (110) is capable of supporting the bi-directional flow of energy pulses and energy transitions thereof between the host (300) and stand-along device (200). In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the host (300) communicates a first binary value to the stand-alone device (200) by coupling a first predetermined number of consecutive energy transitions to the device and a second binary value to the device by coupling a second predetermined number of consecutive energy transitions.

    • A point of sale terminal (11) is disclosed that provides all of the usual point of sale terminal functions, but that is entirely field portable. Data pertinent to each purchase can be input to the terminal via a keyboard assembly (17), a touch-screen display (19) or a signature-capture screen assembly (25), or via an antenna (39) and radio link from an associated bar code scanner. Data may be communicated at any time to a remote host computer, also via a separate antenna and radio link. The communication links with the host computer and the bar code scanner operate independently and simultaneously, using mutually compatible modulation schemes such as a spread spectrum scheme for the host computer link and a narrowband or spread spectrum scheme for the bar code scanner link. The terminal thereby functions as a portable repeater or node in a data communications network.
