Partial images projected on a screen from the projectors overlap to have the edges thereof superposed on edges of adjoining partial images in shared fields on the screen. A sheet interceptor intercepts part of light to be projected on a shared field so that the luminance level in the shared field will agree with the luminance levels in the other fields except the shared fields. An interceptor portion of the sheet interceptor, which intercepts light from the right-hand side of a range on the screen within which a partial image is projected, can be displaced horizontally relative to an interceptor portion thereof that intercepts light from the left-hand side thereof. Likewise, an interceptor portion of the sheet interceptor that intercepts light from the upper side of the projected range can be displaced vertically relative to an interceptor portion thereof that intercepts light from the lower side thereof.

摘要： An optical illumination system for a projection-type display unit is disclosed wherein multiple light sources are oriented so as to cause the optical axes of their emitted light beams to be non-parallel to one another and to overlap at a first lenticular lens array of an integrator section. The function of the integrator section is to make the light from the multiple light sources even, and to serve as a secondary light source in the projection-type display unit. The overlapping of the light beams on the first lenticular lens array of the integrator allows the optical illumination system to be more compact in three dimensions. It also allows the diameter of a polarization converter and a field lens to be made smaller. Thus, production costs are reduced without reducing the brightness of a projected image.

A plurality of translucent panel members are assembled into a spherical dome assembly. The panels have concave inner surfaces treated with an optical medium to create a diffusion surface onto which the projected visual image is displayed to a design eye point located within the dome. The laser-based projectors have a greatly expanded focal range as compared to conventional sources of illumination. This allows the curved panel members to remain in focus when the dome is moved as much as two (2) relative to the location of the laser projector.

The screens incorporate a contrast enhancing component which improves the resistance of the projected image to contrast degradation due to a wide range of ambient light conditions.
