The tool is preferably sized to be hand held and includes a housing having clamps that are positioned to engage recesses within a fusion sleeve placed in a chamber within the housing for holding down the sleeve. The process may be reiterated until maximum throughput (Imax)max has been achieved, at least within an acceptable tolerance.

摘要： Two optical fibers (22, 24) are spliced together to form a single spliced optical fiber. The spliced region is uncontaminated by impurities, and has substantially no loss of optical transmission or mechanical strength as compared to the other regions of the fibers. Splicing is accomplished by removal of the buffer coating (16), if any, cleaving of the fibers to be spliced to form facing splicing surfaces, careful precleaning of the cleaved fibers in the region adjacent the splicing surfaces, aligning the fibers using optical transmission as the alignment criterion, fusing the fibers together by preheating the region to be spliced, fusing the region, postannealing the spliced region, carefully postcleaning the spliced region, and recoating the spliced region with a UV curable polymer buffer material, if desired. The heating of the fibers to accomplish the fusion is desirable accomplished by a laser such as a carbon dioxide laser (50).

Both methods of joining an optical fiber to an optoelectronic component include positioning an optical fiber and optoelectronic component in adjacent relationship such that light signals can pass therebetween, applying a curable resin having adhesive properties to an interface of the optical fiber and the optoelectronic component, aligning the optical fiber and optoelectronic component relative to each other such that signal strength of light signals passing between the optical fiber and the optoelectronic component is substantially maximized. An in situ method further comprises irradiating the interface with non-ionizing radiation in RF/microwave energy to rapidly cure the resin; Whereas a post-cure method comprises irradiating the interface with microwave energy to partially cure the resin, The joined components are then being transferred to a curing oven to fully cure the adhesive resin.
