    • An explosion proof gas-tired water heater is comprised of a housing having a water reservoir provided with a sealed combustion chamber thereunder. A flue pipe is disposed above the combustion chamber and extends through the reservoir. A gas burner and pilot are provided in the combustion chamber. At least one air supply channel is provided to supply fresh air to the combustion chamber. The air supply channel has an intake disposed a predetermined height above the floor to prevent combustible vapors from entering the combustion chamber. Vapor detectors and/or pressure sensors may be provided as added features to detect the presence of combustible vapors as well as the production of harmful carbon monoxide in the combustion chamber and to actuate the gas supply cut-off valve.

    • A water heater is arranged with the hot water storage chamber R1 at the top and the combustion chamber R2 at the bottom within the body 11 which is a container. The combustion chamber R2 is equipped with the air supply inlet 13a, and the flame arrester 27 is provided at the air supply inlet 13a. Within the combustion chamber R2, the main burner 22 and the pilot burner 25 are provided, the changing state of flame of the pilot burner 25 is detected by the thermocouple 26, and a controller 41 closes an electromagnetic valve for opening and closing the main gas passage, stops the combustion of the main burner 22 as well, and rings the alarm 44. In an alternate embodiment, a sensor burner 60 is used as a safety device to detect a state of flame of the sensor burner and to shut off fuel to the main gas burner.

    • The water heater includes a water tank, a burner below the tank, a casing around the outside surface of the tank and spaced therefrom so as to define a flue path within the casing and along the outside surface of the tank for combustion products. Multiple flow restrictions are located in the flue path and extending inwardly from the casing towards the outside surface of the tank and forming regions of restricted flow area so that the combustion products flowing along the flue path encounter the flow restrictions and are restricted and disturbed in flow pattern. The first flow restriction which is first encountered by the combustion products is located at a position along the height of the tank no lower than one third of the overall height of the tank up from the bottom of the tank whereby the lower portion of the tank over which combustion products are flowing are substantially completely exposed to the hottest and most turbulent combustion gases. The flow restrictions can be closed rings which extend inwardly from the casing. The flow restriction rings have tank centering formations in the form of projections which contact the outside surface of the tank so as to thereby locate and maintain the tank centered within the casino. Each of the flow restrictions restricts the flow area of the flue path at the flow restriction by about 50% or more.

    • A heat trap assembly includes a housing adapted for interconnection between a hot water tank and a water line with the housing including an interior flow chamber. A one-way valve is disposed within the chamber for enabling unrestricted water flow only in one direction through the chamber. The valve includes a valve seat fixed within a chamber along one direction and movable in an opposite direction along with a movable sealing member. A spring is provided for urging the sealing member against the valve seat to prevent flow though the chamber in the opposite direction. Water flow in the one direction compresses the spring and dislodges the sealing member from the valve seat. A pressure relief disk is provided and disposed between the valve seat and the end of the chamber. The pressure relief disk compresses under a selected water pressure exerted in the opposite direction for enabling flow in the opposite direction at pressures greater than a selected water pressure within a hot water tank.

    • A water heater includes a tank 10 arranged inside a casing 20 with a burner 16 below the tank so that a heat exchange zone 15 surrounding the tank receives the combustion products. The tank 10 is supported on three edge contact projections 26 resting on ledges 27 located a substantial distance up the sides of the tank. The casing 20 narrows in the upwards direction and a heat shield 30 is coaxially located in the lower portion of the casing where the hottest gases are. A downwardly extending flue 49 outside the casing provides a heat trap. The burner 15 has a burner ring 60 with a unique arrangement of burner ports 62 and a secondary air guide 80. The thermostat probe 14 for the gas valve 17 passes through the heat exchange zone 15 to be intentionally affected by the heat and reduce the achieved operating temperature differential.
