    • An automotive headlamp assembly comprises a reflector positioned within a housing. The reflector defines a lamp cavity where a light source is positioned. The reflector includes a first portion designed to reflect light in a low beam pattern and a second portion designed to reflect light in a high beam pattern. An actuator is also positioned within the lamp cavity. The actuator is operable to move a light shield in a linear direction parallel to the optical axis of the reflector. In particular, the actuator is operable to move the light shield between a low beam position that exposes the light source to the first portion of the reflector and a high beam position that exposes the light source to both the first portion and the second portion of the reflector.

    • An illumination device that includes at least two concentrically mounted cylinders. Mounted within the narrower cylinder is at least one light source. The cylinders are mounted such that at least one of the cylinders may be selectively rotated, by a user, about the common axis of concentricity relative to the other cylinder. Each of the cylinders further includes sections which extend along the long axis thereof, at least one of which is completely opaque and at least one of which is either semi-translucent, completely translucent, or entirely transparent. The sections of various opacities are sufficiently and appropriately sized such that, by corresponding alignments thereof, by the selective relative rotation of the cylinders, the light source within the nested cylinders may alternatively provide illumination, or be effectively covered without requiring the active turning on or off of the light source.

    • A hand-held surgical light assembly is provided with a light source, and a handpiece which is adapted to be grasped and manipulated by a user. The handpiece has a light guide with a proximal end optically connected to the light source, and a distal end which projects outwardly from said handpiece so as to direct light guided thereby onto a field of view determined by manipulation of the handpiece by the user. The handpiece includes a switch assembly which is operatively coupled to the light source to allow user selection between at least two different light intensities (e.g., essentially on/off) discharged by said light guide onto the field of view. In preferred forms, the switch assembly includes an electrically conductive inner core and an electrically conductive outer tubular elastomeric member concentrically positioned in surrounding, but spaced relationship, with the inner base. When contact between the inner base and the outer elastomeric member is made, switch circuitry changes the visible light intensity of the visible light generated by the light source, e.g., by either directly modulating the current to the lamp itself, or by providing an electrically operable shutter assembly which masks the light generated by the light source. The former embodiment is especially well suited for surgical lights which are self-contained (i.e., have the light sources contained in the handpiece), while the latter is especially well suited for surgical lights which have remotely positioned light sources.

    • A vehicular headlamp in which a light source and an actuator are connected to a power source using the minimum number of parts, lamp body waterproofing and dustproofing are assured, and each connector is firmly secured to the lamp body of the headlamp. The headlamp includes the actuator for operating a light distribution changing device that changes the distribution of light emitted from the light source.     • A headlamp adjuster configured for engagement with a reflector of a headlamp assembly. The headlamp adjuster includes a U-shaped structure which is engaged with a screw and which is engageable with the reflector. The screw is prevented from translating substantially upon rotation, but the headlamp adjuster is configured such that rotation of the screw causes the U-shaped structure to translate thereby moving the reflector. The screw includes an externally threaded shaft portion which is threadably engaged with an internally threaded bore of the U-shaped structure. The U-shaped structure may be a single piece which is engaged with the screw and is engageable with the reflector, or may include a U-shaped member which is engaged with the screw and a slide member, where the slide member is engageable with the reflector.

    • A motor vehicle headlight comprises a reflector arranged to be oriented along the horizontal axis of the vehicle, together with a light source situated in the vicinity of the focus of the reflector. It also includes a filter which is able to occupy a withdrawn first position in which it does not interfere with the light beam, and a working second position in which it interferes with at least part of the beam. Means are provided for moving the filter between its working and withdrawn positions. The filter is a diffusing and absorbing filter which does not substantially modify the wavelengths of the emergent light as compared with the incident light, and which is arranged so that, with the filter in the working position, a second type of light beam is produced having a reduced intensity, and, optionally, a modified photometric distribution.
