    • The present invention relates to a device/connection which can be used e.g. in a vacuum cleaner pipe, which thereby can be made bendable to facilitate vacuum-cleaning under beds, tables and the like. I one simple operation a moveable part (5) can be displaced inwards, whereupon a locking pipe (6) prevents a bendable hose (2) from being bent when the operator so desires, for instance during cleaning of open surfaces without obstacles. Cleaning under beds can however cause the operator to redraw the locking pipe (6) with the moveable part (5), whereupon the vacuum cleaner pipe becomes bendable again and the operator can vacuum-clean under the bed in standing position.

    • A universal pipe joint for attaching two round pipes together accommodating misalignment using a female adapter fitting (30) engaging a male adapter fitting (44), each having a radial interior and exterior diameter (38) and (50) with a compression nut (52) urging them together. The female fitting has external threads (40) with a number of locking grooves (42) at right angles to the threads, and a compression nut with a spring-loaded ball (54) therein that clicks into the grooves while the nut is being tightened. When the nut is fully tightened, the radial diameters are compressed and the ball (62) is locked into the groove with a set screw (66). Thus securing the connection and eliminating loosening by over the road operation of a vehicle to which the device is attached. A second embodiment replaces the compression nut with a pair of flanges (68) held together by nuts and bolts. A third embodiment adds a radial compression gasket (76) to the basic configuration for use with liquids at higher pressures than exhaust systems of the preferred embodiment.

    • A flexible, sectioned plastic arm for a showerhead comprises a series of interconnected ball-and-socket (B&S) sections (10) with a proximal (shower pipe) end piece (12) and a distal (showerhead) end piece (14). Each B&S section has a proximal (cup or socket) end (10S) and a distal (ball) end (10B). The proximal end piece has a proximal end with female threads which can be screwed onto a shower pipe and a ball-shaped distal end for snapping into the socket of the most proximal section of the shower arm. The distal end piece has a proximal end with a socket for snapping onto the most distal end section of the shower arm and a distal end with male threads (12T) which can be screwed onto the showerhead. The arm has a through hole containing a series or chain of cylindrical brass or other metal sections, tubes, or sleeves (16). These prevent the arm from being bent too far, thereby to keep the B&S from separating. The two end tubes abut a pair of respective resilient spacers (18) or springs (18S), which in turn abut shoulders in the end pieces to keep the series of tubes in place. Inside the series of tubes is a flexible plastic tube (20) for carrying the water without leakage. A T-shaped end fitting (20T) is attached to each end of the plastic tube. These end fittings hold the tube in the arm. The top arm of the T of the distal end fitting sits in the bottom of the female threaded end of the proximal end piece. The top arm of the T of the distal end fitting sits on the very end of the male threaded end of the distal end piece.

    • A fluid coupling device employs a male spherical member with a fluid receiving bore and a female housing. The spherical member abuts two axially spaced Teflon ring seats between the member and the housing in the housing chamber. The ring seats reduce friction between the member and the housing and axially retain the member in the housing with no metal to metal contact. A first O-ring provides fluid sealing between the spherical member and housing inner wall in the chamber. A hose receiving nipple member with a fluid receiving bore has a threaded concave end with a peripheral region that engages the first O-ring to hold the O-ring against the spherical member, one of the ring seats and housing chamber wall to seal the interface between the spherical member and housing. The nipple member has a flange which abuts the housing to limit squeezing action on the O-ring to ensure sufficient contact of the O-ring and mating surfaces to obtain a good seal without creating excessive friction loads. A second O-ring seals the interface between the flange and housing.

    • Two steel pipes are each connected to a mounting flange for joining the two pipes, the flanges in one embodiment being fixed stationary to each other and in a second embodiment fixed movable relative to each other. A compressed knitted wire mesh seal is between the two flanges in a dynamic embodiment. Each flange has a spherical inner concave or outer convex surface and the seal has an inner concave and outer convex spherical surface. The seal outer convex spherical surface has a radius smaller than the mating flange concave inner surface. The origins of the two radii are offset. The seal inner concave spherical surface has a radius that is larger than the mating spherical outer convex surface of the corresponding flange. The seal contacts the two flanges in an annular set of pressure points to provide enhanced sealing action. In a second embodiment, the pipes are fixed stationary relative to each other and the outer flange is connected to a pipe spherical segment which segment has an inner concave spherical surface which engages the seal outer convex surface. The radii of the mating surfaces are different to provide enhanced sealing pressure points at the tangency of the mating surfaces.

    • A connector for coupling pipe sections which may be either aligned or misaligned axially, the connector having a male fitting, a female fitting which mates with the male fitting and a retaining means which can be connected to the female fitting to hold the male fitting in place against the female fitting. In one embodiment, the retaining means comprises a hammer nut which has a retaining surface. The retaining surface of the hammer nut contacts a rear surface of a first one of the flanges for urging this flange forward. The hammer nut has threads which are complementary to a set of threads on the second flange. When the hammer nut is threaded onto the second flange, the first and second flanges are pulled together. The retaining surface of the hammer nut and the rear surface of the first flange have complementary spherical shapes so that the hammer nut can rotate and swivel with respect to the flange. The hammer nut can therefore be aligned with the second flange and threaded onto it, even though the first and second flanges are misaligned.
