    • An apparatus is disclosed for maintaining a fluid seal with a moving substrate. The apparatus includes an enclosure and a cap. The enclosure has a first surface and a second surface with the first surface being in sealing contact with the moving substrate. The cap seals off the second surface of the enclosure. The cap is secured to the enclosure at at least two spaced apart locations and has a non-secured portion that is capable of deflecting independently of the enclosure. The apparatus further includes means for introducing a pressurized fluid into the enclosure. The pressurized fluid creates a net force on the enclosure of zero and a force on the cap which causes a portion of the cap to deflect. The deflection of the cap allows the first surface of the enclosure to remain in sealing contact with the moving substrate.

    • Seal devices of this invention are prepared by the process of depositing a polymer material onto a metallic substrate to form a composite construction, and shape forming the composite construction into the shape of a seal device. The so-formed seal device comprises a casing member that is formed from the metallic substrate, and a sealing element disposed along a surface of the casing member that is formed from the polymer material for placement against a sealing surface. Seal devices of this invention can be shaped formed into a variety of different types of seals, e.g., lips seals, L-shaped seals, and U-cup seals, which may or may not be energized. Seal devices prepared according to this invention using such preformed composite construction enable seal formation by a single step of shape forming, without having to both make and form individual seal members, and subsequently combine or join the separately formed seal members together.

    • A circumferential film-riding seal operative in a gaseous or liquid environment about a rotating shaft is provided so that it is able to function with extended lifetime, low leakage, and a high-pressure difference thereacross. These characteristics are achieved by the employment of a segmented seal ring mounted in tandem with a floating load ring surrounding the rotating shaft. The seal ring has a bore surface thereon confronting the shaft, and the bore surface has a circumferential lift region located downstream of a circumferential bearing region. The bearing region has additional lift grooves either in the seal ring or in the shaft surface confronting the bearing region, together with feed grooves connecting the additional lift grooves, respectively, to a higher-pressure region adjacent the shaft. In certain embodiments the shaft has a sleeve secured thereto, which confronts the bore surface of the seal ring and the load ring, and wherein the additional lift grooves and respective feed grooves may be formed in the shaft sleeve. Also, the shaft sleeve may have a segment of reduced diameter formed thereon so that the diameter of the sleeve confronting the load ring is smaller than the diameter confronting the seal ring to provide pressure balance across the load ring.

    • A wiper seal for a hydraulic component is provided. The wiper seal includes a support member and a body portion. The support member includes a first leg having an inner surface, a first end, and a second end. The first leg extends substantially parallel to a reference axis. A second leg having an outer surface extends substantially perpendicular to the reference axis from the first end of the first leg.     • O-ring seals for rock bit bearings comprise a body formed from an elastomeric material having one or more lubricant additive uniformly distributed throughout to reduce the coefficient of friction and stick slick amplitude at O-ring seal surfaces. The lubricant additives are selected from the group consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene, hexagonal boron nitride, flake graphite, ultra-high molecular weight polyurethane, and mixtures thereof. O-ring seals made from elastomeric compositions of this invention comprise in the range of from about 85 to 99 percent by volume elastomeric material, and in the range of from about 1 to 15 percent by volume of the lubricant additives based on the total volume of the composition.
