    • In a non-finite speed ratio transmission device using a toroidal continuously variable transmission (2), a hydraulic cylinder (30) for driving a power roller (20) via a trunnion (23), a shift control valve (46) for controlling a supply direction of oil to an oil chambers (30A, 30B) of the hydraulic cylinder (30), and a precess cam (35) which feeds back a displacement of the power roller (20) to the shift control valve (46) so as to shut-off the flow of oil to and from the oil chambers (30A, 30B), are provided. The shift control valve (46) comprises a drain port (46J) which can be connected to the oil chamber (30A) and a drain port (46I) which can be connected to the oil chamber (30B). By providing a positive torque control valve (40) which controls the oil pressure of the drain port (46I), and a negative torque control valve (45) which controls the oil pressure of the drain port (46J), the shift control valve (46) controls a differential pressure &Dgr;P of the oil chambers (30A, 30B) from 0 to a line pressure PL when the speed ratio ic of the toroidal continuously variable transmission (2) is maintained in the vicinity of a geared neutral position GNP.

    • A torque coupling connects the secondary driving wheels of an automotive vehicle indirectly to the power unit of the vehicle through a variable torque coupling, while the primary driving wheels on the vehicle are connected directly to the power unit. The coupling compensates for variations in the angular velocity of the primary and secondary wheels while still transferring torque to the secondary wheels. The coupling includes a magnetic particle clutch organized about an axis and a planetary gear set organized about the same axis. The coupling has two paths through which the torque is transferred, one a mechanical path and the other a clutch path. Most of the torque is transferred through the mechanical path, while the clutch path accommodates for slippage and controls the proportion of torque delivered to the secondary wheels, with the control being solely dependent on the magnitude of the current directed through the clutch.

    • A planetary gear transmission has two or more planetary gear sets in the gear train. Each planetary gear set comprises a sun gear mounted on a sun shaft with the sun gear engaging a plurality of planet gears mounted on a planet gear carrier with the plurality of planet gears engaging a ring gear mounted on the transmission housing. Each gear of the planetary gear transmission is a helical cut gear. Sun gears and/or ring gears are mounted for axial movement with respect to the transmission. Thrust imbalances on the sun gears and/or ring gears resulting from uneven loading and the helical cut result in sun gears and/or ring gears moving in the axial direction to eliminate the thrust imbalances and thereby resulting in equal loading or power sharing amongst the planetary gear sets.
