    • An endless link chain, particularly for use in a continuously variable transmission in the power train of a motor vehicle, has composite links and pintles which articulately connect neighboring links to each other. At least one of the links is assembled of at least two types of parallel plate-like components which differ from each other in size, shape, material and/or strength. The purpose of such selection of the plate-like components is to enhance one or more characteristics of the chain, for example, to reduce or eliminate vibration, to reduce the bulk and/or to properly position the pintles. The distribution of components in one or more links can be selected with a view to influence the above-enumerated and/or other characteristics, such as the resistance to deformation, of the chain.

    • A retainer subassembly for a master link of a chain includes a cover plate, a pair of snap rings and a strap plate. The cover plate includes a pair of stepped recesses terminating in openings adjacent the outer face of the cover plate for receiving the spaced pins of a master link. Snap rings having radially inwardly extending and axially outwardly inclined tangs are disposed in the recesses. A strap plate overlies the inside face of the cover plate. To apply the retainer subassembly to the master link, the holes through the retainer subassembly are aligned with the pins and the retainer subassembly is pushed onto the pins. Once the flanges of the snap rings pass the ends of the pins, the flanges resiliently snap into the annular grooves of the pins retaining the retainer subassembly on the master link.

    • An energy supply line guiding chain that comprises flexibly interconnected chain links. The energy supply line guiding chain has a channel (6) that extends in the axial direction of the energy supply line guiding cable for receiving supply lines. The channel (6) is defined by chain links (2, 3, 4, and 5). Each chain link (2, 3, 4, and 5) has an opening (7, 8, 9, 10) that terminates in channel (6). The opening (7, 8, 9, 10) is defined by at least one cross bar (11; 12a, 12b; 13a, 13b; 14a, 14b). The openings (7, 8, 9, 10) of adjacent chain links (2, 3, 4, 5) are offset substantially transversely to the axial direction of the energy supply line guiding chain (1). Preferably, the energy supply line guiding chain (1) has a repeating sequence of links (16) with at least two adjacent chain links (2, 3, 4, 5) with openings (7, 8, 9, 10) offset relative to one another.

    • A drive chain suitable for use in a continuously variable transmission of a motor vehicle, the transmission having two pairs of spaced drive members about which the chain passes to transfer torque from one drive member to the other. The chain includes a plurality of link elements that include spaced, side-by-side plate links. The plate links include openings in which pairs of parallel rocker members are disposed for relative rocking movement of at least one rocker member about its longitudinal axis. The rocker members extend outwardly beyond the plate links and are retained in position by retaining members that engage particular rocker members. A method for stretching the chain is also disclosed in which areas of some of the plate links are plastically deformed before the chain is put to use.
