    • A clutch/brake assembly for use on a riding lawnmower or other powered equipment includes a pair of input disks, a pair of output disks, and a housing. An output pulley is coupled for rotation with the output disks and is coupled to at least one working shaft, such as a blade shaft supporting a cutting blade of the lawnmower. The input and output disks are disengaged from each other when the clutch/brake assembly is in a braking condition. Also, when in the braking condition, at least one of the output disks is biased against a braking surface of the housing to resist rotation of the output pulley and the working shafts. An actuator assembly is also included in the clutch/brake assembly, and is actuable to substantially simultaneously disengage the output disks from the braking surface of the housing and sandwich the input and output disks together. When sandwiched together, the input and output disks are coupled for rotation together by the frictional forces therebetween.

    • Bicycle brake shoes are provided for a bicycle braking device. The brake shoes are pressed into contact with a bicycle wheel rim to apply a braking force thereto. The brake shoes are coupled to the bicycle braking device by brake shoe holders. Each brake shoe includes an attachment portion coupled to the brake shoe holder and a rim contacting portion for contacting the side braking surface of the rim. The brake shoes are formed from a non-sulfur cross-linked polymer such as butadiene rubber (BR) or acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) being cross-linked with zinc methacrylic acid. In the preferred embodiment, the rim contacting portion is further formed by cross-linking the butadiene rubber or acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber with a binder such as peroxide. The brake shoe is elongated in the rotation direction of the wheel rim and has a braking surface opposite to the braked surface of the rim.

    • A non-asbestos friction material is obtained by molding and curing a composition comprising a fibrous base, a filler and a binder. The binder is present in a total amount V1 and the filler contains in part graphite present in an amount V2, each expressed in volume percent of the overall composition, such that the product V1×V2 is from 10 to 100 and the sum V1+V2 is from 10 to 30. When used as a brake lining in drum brakes, for example, the friction material exhibits low wear during high-speed braking, excellent heat resistance, stable braking effectiveness and good strength.

    • A metallic cast material for friction bodies in acceleration or deceleration devices, particularly in the brake or clutch systems of road or rail vehicles, is produced from the iron/aluminum/carbon tertiary group so that the material is largely in the intermetallic phase having an ordered crystal lattice structure, and free carbon in lamellar, sphoroidal or vermicular form is present therein. The proportion of aluminum in the alloy is between 20 and 28% by weight, preferably 24% by weight. The material may be melted and cast open to the air. Solid or internally ventilated brake discs are mentioned as appropriate friction bodies. The friction bodies are lighter, more resistant to corrosion and wear, have a higher alternate bending fatigue strength and are at least as easily workable as previously known friction bodies made from ferrous materials.

    • A brake unit including a brake disc of a material having a high thermal loading capacity and a brake pad that cooperates with it in tribological fashion. The brake disc is essentially made of a short-fiber reinforced ceramic material, whose thermal conductivity, in particular transversely to the disc surface, is at least 20 W/mK, preferably about 30 to 45 W/mK. The brake disc is combined with a brake pad having an organically bonded matrix. The brake pad may be a conventional series brake pad. The brake unit provides an optimal pairing of a brake disc, having a high thermal loading capacity, with a conventional brake pad in light of a reasonably expected brake pad service life, and in light of other tribological requirements, such as the friction coefficient.

Preferably, one protrusion is provided at each corner of the pad. This helps to reduce wear of the disc producing judder vibration during braking by reducing disc thickness variation.
