    • A self-servoing disc brake assembly is provided that includes a driven rotor member having a first inner surface with a plurality of first pockets. The driven rotor member also includes a first friction surface spaced from the first inner surface. A movable rotor member is supported on the driven rotor member and is movable relative to the driven rotor member between non-servoed and servoed positions. The rotor members are spaced a first distance in the non-servo position, and the rotor members are spaced a second distance which is greater than a first distance in the servo position. The movable rotor member includes a second inner surface with a plurality of second pockets adjacent to the first inner surface and a friction surface spaced from the second inner surface. A plurality of balls are arranged between the first and second pockets with at least one of the first and second pockets being ramped. A friction member, such as a disc brake pad, is arranged adjacent to the second friction surface and is movable between engaged and non-engaged positions. The friction member is spaced from the second friction surface in the non-engaged position and the friction member is in contact with the second friction surface in the engaged position to rotate the movable rotor member to the servoed position and produce a supplemental brake clamping force. As the brake pads are moved into engagement with the driven and movable rotor members, a shear force is created on the second friction surface. The shear force causes the movable rotor member to rotate relative to and away from the driven rotor member. As a result, for a particular brake input force a larger braking torque is achieved.

    • An abrasive coating is provided on the friction surface of a braking element, such as, but not limited to a disc brake pad. The abrasive coating is capable of removing a protective coating from a rotor during the initial breaking in period of the brake pad. Additionally, the abrasive coating is capable of polishing away surface irregularities on an improperly resurfaced rotor. The abrasive coating is characterized in that no noise is generated during the establishment of the burnish relationship between the brake pad and the rotor that is attributable to the abrasive coating. The abrasive coating is preferably in the form of two parallel stripes substantially centered on the brake pad away from the leading and trailing edges and extending from one lateral edge to the other lateral edge such that the stripes are substantially perpendicular to the direction of rotation of the rotor.

    • This invention relates to a drum-in-hat disc brake assembly. According to one embodiment of the invention, only four fasteners extend through the associated apertures of the backing plate, the drum-in-hat adapter, the axle flange and the caliper bracket for securing the caliper bracket, drum-in-hat adapter and the backing plate to the axle flange. Two of the four fasteners extend through the two apertures of the caliper bracket and at least partially into two of the four apertures of the axle flange to thereby secure the caliper bracket to the axle flange. The other two of the four fasteners extend through the two smaller apertures of the backing plate and the drum-in-hat adapter and at least partially into the remaining two apertures of the axle flange to thereby secure the backing plate and the drum-in-hat adapter to the axle flange.

    • An integrated drive unit having planetary gearing and an annular cone brake element affixed to a hydraulic motor barrel. A brake piston encircles the hydraulic motor barrel and is selectively engageable with the cone brake element to actuate the cone brake element into frictional contact with the spindle of the integrated drive unit to act as a safety/parking brake. The cone brake element is formed of a bronze-type powdered metal of sufficient durability to withstand dynamic braking. The hydraulic motor is selectively connectable to a transmission including planetary gearing. The planetary gearing of the present invention includes a planet gear carrier having carrier pins formed of a relatively low carbon steel and locally hardened over the area on which the planet gears will be supported. In an alternative embodiment, a carrier pins sleeve formed of VESPEL is utilized as the bearing between the planet gear and the carrier pin.
