    • A shaft rotates within a housing on a double row tapered roller bearing and remains extremely stable at all temperatures, even though the housing is formed from a light weight metal having a significantly greater coefficient of thermal expansion than the metal of the bearing. To this end, the housing contains a bore defined by a cylindrical surface and a conical surface which flares away from the cylindrical surface and opens out of one face of the housing. The bearing has two cones which surround the shaft, a unitary or double cup which fits into the bore of the housing, and tapered rollers arranged in two rows between the cones and cup. The double cup on its exterior has a cylindrical surface which fits into the cylindrical surface of the housing bore and a flange provided with a beveled face which is against the conical surface of the housing bore. In addition, the cup has a threaded end which projects axially beyond the cylindrical surface of the cup engages a nut that is on the housing at the end of the cylindrical surface of the bore. The nut draws the beveled surface of the cup flange tightly against the conical surface of the housing bore. With an elevation in temperature, the housing expands axially and causes the flange to seat even more tightly against the conical surface of the housing, so that the cup remains firmly positioned, both radially and axially, in the housing, even though the cylindrical surface of the housing bore enlarges with respect to the cylindrical surface on the housing.

    • The present invention provides a bearing device reliable of shielding any material or fluid from moving between a fluid passage within a fluid system housing and an outside of the housing. In the above bearing device, a roller bearing (12) equipped with sealing plates (17) is fitted into a coupling bore (11) in an intake pipe (1) serving as the housing so that the roller bearing (12) can bear a shaft (6) of a butterfly valve disposed in a fluid passage (2) within the intake pipe (1). The outer race (13) and the inner race (14) of the roller bearing (12) are formed with annular grooves (21, 22), respectively, and O-rings (23, 24) are engagingly arranged on the interior of the annular grooves (21, 22), respectively. With the bearing device having this structure, the O-rings (23, 24) can prevent air, etc. from permeating into the intake passage (2) even though clearance (a, b) occurs in the engaged sections due to a dimensional error, difference in thermal expansion, etc.

    • The present invention provides bearing assemblies and methods of manufacturing bearing assemblies which allow for reliable, non-intrusive wear detection. In one embodiment, a bearing assembly (10) includes first and second bearing members (12, 14) adapted for movement relative to each other. The first bearing member includes an outer layer (24) that is adapted to wear in response to the relative movement between bearing members, and an inner layer. The inner layer includes a base portion (28) having a first hardness and a plurality of spaced apart wear indicating regions (30) having a second hardness, whereby the first hardness and second hardness are different. The wear indicating regions are adapted to produce a vibration after sufficient wear of the outer layer.
