    • A hydrocarbon adsorption apparatus is provided in an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine. The hydrocarbon adsorption apparatus is equipped with a main passage, a switching valve for opening and closing the main passage, and a bypass passage for bypassing the main passage. The switching valve is coupled to a diaphragm of a diaphragm mechanism. A variable chamber in the diaphragm mechanism is connected to an intake manifold through a negative pressure feed line and a vacuum switching valve. When the vacuum switching valve is turned on, a negative pressure is supplied to the variable pressure chamber so that the diaphragm is deflected. In response to the deflection of the diaphragm, the switching valve is closed. The state of the switching valve is judged based on a tendency of changes in pressure of the negative pressure feed line when the vacuum switching valve is turned on.

    • A time warp method of reducing noise in an exhaust stream includes the step of directing the exhaust stream into an inlet aperture of a sound cancellation chamber. The method also includes reflecting sound in the sound cancellation chamber toward the inlet aperture of the sound cancellation chamber. Another step of the method includes spreading the exhaust stream radially toward a periphery of the sound cancellation chamber. Yet another step of the method includes collecting exhaust from the periphery of the sound cancellation chamber in an outlet collector ring. Moreover, the method includes directing the exhaust collected from the periphery of the sound cancellation chamber substantially circumferentially about the sound cancellation chamber toward an outlet aperture of the outlet collector ring. Muffler devices for implementing the method are also disclosed.

    • An exhaust gas system includes a collector for joining exhaust gas flows from two or more cylinders of a combustion engine. The collector has an outlet cross-section behind which a tubular jacket is disposed. A honeycomb body is disposed in the tubular jacket. A space through which a flow is to take place is defined between the outlet cross-section and the honeycomb body. At least one guide surface is disposed in the space for diverting at least a part of the exhaust gas flows. A method is provided for applying exhaust gas flows to a honeycomb body. The flows arrive at the honeycomb body at least partly from different directions. The exhaust gas flows are diverted by at least a first guide surface, before they impinge upon the honeycomb body, in such a way that they flow in a direction at least partly opposite to that of the exhaust gas flows, and their incidence upon the honeycomb body is thus delayed.
