    • An actuator for operating a vehicle door includes a spring that is adapted to frictionally connect a wheel gear and an output gear upon actuation of an electric motor. The wheel gear and the output gear are operatively connected by the frictional contact of the spring relative to the wheel gear and the output gear upon actuation of the electric motor. The spring separates the wheel gear and the output gear to return the output gear to an initial position when operation of the electric motor is stopped.

    • A window lift mechanism for raising and lowering a window in a vehicle door includes a support bracket mounted to the window and a motor supported on the support bracket, wherein the support bracket permits the axial and rotational movement of the window relative to the support bracket. A pair of parallel, vertical racks are mounted to the door and are positioned immediately adjacent to the window. A worm gear is driven by a worm with a lead angle greater than seven degrees coupled to a motor. A clutch mechanism is utilized to prevent back drive of the worm/worm gear system. The worm gear is operatively coupled to a pinion gear with resilient shock absorbers that are provided with notched surfaces to accommodate for compression of the resilient material with an enclosed space.

    • A non-contact sensor system controls movement of a door moving in a first direction by actuation of a device. The system includes a transmitter extending a predetermined distance beyond a leading edge of the door at a first door end for transmitting a signal toward a second door end. The transmitter is attached to the door by a first moveable member which is capable of engaging a surface when the door closes and moving to a retracted position. The sensor system further includes a receiver extending a predetermined distance beyond the leading edge of the door at the second door end in alignment with the transmitter for detecting the signal, and for generating an output signal when the signal is blocked. The receiver is attached to the door by a second moveable member which is capable of engaging the surface when the door closes and moving to the retracted position.

    • A control utilizes a unique linear motor for a vehicle closure system that has a plurality of rungs crossing between side pieces. The rungs are made to provide an individual signal to a sensor such that the sensor can identify the location of the closure as it passes the rungs. In one example the distance between adjacent rungs is varied such that each of the distances are unique. In this way, the control can identify the actual location of the closure by identifying the particular signal. In other embodiments the rungs are made to each be individual in some fashion. As an example, the size of each rung can be varied.

    • A power operating system for opening and closing a vehicle liftgate has a pair of drive units supported on the vehicle roof and connected to the liftgate for opening and closing the liftgate. Each drive unit includes a housing having a curved track and a curved gear rack that is bodily movable endwise in the housing and guided by the curved track, the rack also serving as the drive link between the housing and the liftgate. The combined rack and drive link is extended and retracted by a pinion gear that is journalled interiorly in the housing and engages the teeth of the curved gear rack. The pinion gear is rotated by the output shaft of the motor, which in turn is fastened to the side of the housing. The motor is a reversible electric motor and is adapted to be operably coupled to the vehicle ECU unit and preferably includes an internal transmission and electrically operated clutch controlled by the ECU unit.
