    • A mast assembly is adapted for attachment to an excavating apparatus such as a loader bucket of a skid steer vehicle such as a BOBCAT. The excavating apparatus includes a rear wall, a pair of side walls, and a bottom. The mast assembly includes a mast, which can be fabricated from any suitable relatively rigid and durable material, such as aluminized steel. The mast includes an upper portion and a lower portion connected by an angled portion angled to maintain the upper portion in an upright vertical position. A laser receiver is secured to the upper portion of the mast with a pair of adjustable securing straps. The laser receiver operates in a known manner to receive laser energy from a laser beacon to facilitate accurate positioning of the excavating apparatus. A first removable securing member, such as a hook arrangement or latch bracket, is affixed to the mast. The hook arrangement can include a pair of hooks which extend through a corresponding number of bores formed in the excavating apparatus. The latch bracket can include a pair of latch points that fit into an adapter plate. A second removable securing member, such as a magnet, is connected to the mast. The second securing member is attached to the mast by a pair of adjustable securing straps, or by a pivotable bracket. The magnet should have sufficient strength to secure the mast to the excavating apparatus such that the mast remains fixed during excavation.

    • A material spreading apparatus is designed to fill recesses in a generally horizontal surface with a filler material such as asphalt. The apparatus can be moved in a forward direction over the generally horizontal surface so as to define a coverage path. The coverage path may be defined as including multiple parallel treatment zones. The material spreading apparatus includes a support frame and a sensing system having multiple sensing zones. One sensing zone corresponds to each of the treatment zones. The sensing system is responsive to the presence of a recess in any one of the sensing zones. A filling means is supported by the frame and has a plurality of filling zones. One filling zone corresponds to each treatment zone. The filling means is in communication with an activatable by the sensing system such that it deposits filler material in one of the filling zones when the sensing system senses the presence of a recess in the corresponding treatment zone. The filling means includes multiple discrete containers, each container having walls and an opening defined in the container so as to allow asphalt filling material to be expelled from the container. One wall of each of the discrete containers is a movable belt which operates to urge asphalt material toward and out the opening in the container.

    • In the method of the present invention, a machine having a tool with hydraulically moveable ends, such for example as a screed head, is setup for operation by using an inclinometer or other sensor to determine the orientation of the tool. According to this method, the on grade elevational position of the first end of the tool with respect to the reference is selected, and the first end of the tool is then moved to the desired elevational position while an elevation receiver at the first end detects the reference, such as a beam of laser light. The on grade orientation of the tool along its length from one end to the other is selected, and the second end of the tool moved until the on grade orientation of the tool along its length is sensed. The reference is then detected with the elevation receiver at the second end of the tool. The detected positions of the reference at the first and second ends of the tool are then stored as on grade positions. The elevational positions of the ends of the tool are controlled to be on grade during operation in relation to the reference detected by elevation receivers.

    • An apparatus for use in shearing paving material applied to a surface is provided. This apparatus includes a blade for shearing the asphalt mixture to a desired thickness, cylinders for raising and lowering the blade in response to elevational changes in the surface, at least one signal generator associated with each cylinder and adapted to produce a signal indicative of the elevation of the surface, and at least one signal receiver associated with each signal generator. This blade apparatus is coupled with a prime mover. The receiver is operable to activate the cylinders in response to a signal received from the generator. The blade is raised and lowered as the elevation of the surface changes in response to signals emanating from the generator allowing surface level variations to be evened out while paving.
