    • 525,012. Dyeing textiles. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Feb. 11, 1939, No. 4538. Convention date, Feb. 11, 1938. [Class 15 (ii)] Cellulose esters or ethers, dyeing ; azo dyes, forming on the material.-In the production of azo dyes on textile materials made of or containing cellulose esters or ethers by diazotizing a diazotizable base thereon and coupling with a component, the material containing the diazotizable base is treated with mineral acid prior to the diazotization. The dyeings so produced are of specially good fastness to rubbing and to bleeding in presence of moisture. The quantity of mineral acid used is preferably at least equivalent to the amino group or groups of the base and the diazotization 'is preferably effected in presence of ¢ to 1 equivalent of mineral acid per amino group in addition to any acid required to liberate nitrous acid from nitrites. Specified mineral acids are hydrochloric, sulphuric and phosphoric acids. Specified diazotizable bases are p-aminobenzene-azo- α-naphthylamine, p-hydroxybenzene-azo-α- naphthylamine, benzene-azo-α-naphthylamine, o- and p-methoxybenzene-azo-α-naphthylamines and α-amino-azo-naphthalene. Specified coupling components are 2:3-hydroxynaphthoic acid, α- and #-naphthols, salicylic acid and their derivatives. In an example, a cellulose acetate fabric is rinsed first in cold water, then in water at 90‹C. treated with an aqueous solution at 90‹C. containing p-aminobenzene-azo-α-naphthylamine, sulphonated naphthalene ricinoleic acid, "Gardinol" (Registered Trade Mark) and soda ash, scoured in an aqueous solution containing "Gardinol" and soda ash, passed through a dilute solution at 18-25‹C. of hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, then through a solution at 18-22‹C. containing sodium nitrite and sulphuric acid, washed in sodium acetate solution at 18-20‹C., then passed through an aqueous solution first at 18-25‹C. and afterwards at 60- 70‹C. containing 2:3-hydroxynaphthoic acid, " Gardinol," xylene and turkey red oil, such solution having a pH valve of 6-6.5, washed and dried to obtain a black dyeing, fast to rubbing, bleeding, light, acids, alkalies and perspiration. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modified process in which the acidification prior to diazotization is omitted and the diazotization is effected in presence of mineral acid in excess of that equivalent to the amino group or groups of the base, and apart from that necessary to liberate nitrous acid from a nitrite, and includes an example of this process. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
