    • A sampling apparatus and process for obtaining microbial samples from a suspect surface, such as a meat processing facility, animal carcass, and the like, wherein a agar saturated porous plastic foam strip is placed in contact with the suspect surface and thereafter incubated to indicate the presence and quantity of microbial growth on the suspect surface. The porous plastic foam strip is attached to one surface of a double faced adhesive tape with the other tape face being adhesively attached to a spool on a hand roller to permit hand pressure application of the porous plastic sampler to the test surface. For use of the sampler without the roller, one surface of the double face adhesive tape is attached to a plastic strip and the sampler may be hand positioned directly on the suspect test surface. Agar for specific known bacteria may be employed to saturate the porous plastic foam sampler.

    • An improved cell carrier grid. The grid is capable of containing and retaining individual living cells in an array discrete locations and includes a body that defines having an ordered array of holes arranged according to an organizational plan such that each of the holes is identifiable. Each of said holes can contain at least a portion of an individual living cell. According to some embodiments of the invention, individual cells contained within said holes reside substantially in a single focal plane so that accuracy of data collected is increased. According to some embodiments of the invention, said body is at least partially coated with a biologically active material. According to some embodiments of the invention, said body is designed and constructed such that said individual cells contained within said holes are recoverable by a recovery device.

    • An inoculation storage assembly and method of preserving sterility including an inoculation device (20), a storage rack or container (84, 184), and a handling tool (60, 160). The inoculation device (20) being an elongated ember (22) with a gripping section (24), an inoculation section (26), and a seal (25) carried by elongated member (22). The seal (25) preferably having an arcuate surface (19) for sealing engagement against a seal contact surface (162, 262) in a cavity (86, 186) in the storage rack (84, 184). The storage container (84, 184) including an open upper end or opening (88) and a seal contact surface (162, 262) dimensioned to sealingly receive the seal (25), with the inoculation device (20) being mounted in sealed relation to the cavity (86). A handling tool (60, 160) capable of releasable coupling to gripping section (24) of the inoculation device (20) is provided. A method of using the inoculation storage assembly and preserving sterility is also disclosed.
