    • 1280207 Fluoroalkyl phenyl polysiloxanes DOW CORNING CORP 21 July 1969 [18 Dec 1968] 36537/69 Heading C3T [Also in Division C5] A linear polysiloxane consisting essentially of units R f CH 2 CH 2 (C 6 H 5 )SiO, wherein R f is a C 1-10 perfluoroalkyl radical, is prepared by polymerization of the cyclic trimer in the presence of a basic catalyst e.g. n-butyl lithium, an alkali metal hydroxide or silanolate or a quaternary ammonium hydroxide. The polymer is a fluid, gum, or solid of narrow molecular weight range, soluble in e.g. benzene, toluene or xylene. In examples a mixture of cis and trans [CF 3 CH 2 CH 2 (C 6 H 5 )SiO] 3 is heated with n-butyl lithium at 150‹ C. for 2-4 mins. to give polymers of number average molecular weight (M n ) of 18,800 to 100,000 and heterogeneity ratio M w /M n (M w being the weight average molecular weight) of 1À18; in Example 4 water is also added, to give a hydroxy-terminated polymer of M n 7000 and M w /M n of 1À40; in Example 5 and 6 the catalyst used is (CH 3 ) 3 SiONa at 125‹ C. for some hours, giving polymers of melt viscosity 213,000 eS and 821,340 cS; in Example 7 R f is C 5 F 11 ; in Example 8 the cis and trans isomers are separated by differential extraction of an npentane solution with acetonitrile, and the cis isomer is polymerized using sec-butyl lithium as catalyst. The polymers may be applied from toluene solution to a surface to provide a solid lubricant coating: polymers for this purpose are semi-crystalline solids having at least 150 units.
