    • Lubricant compositions contain, as ashless additives, oil-soluble block polymers made from monomers having oil-solubilizing groups or from which block with oil-solubilizing properties can be prepared, and vinyl N-heterocyclic monomers containing 5 or 6-membered rings, at least the polar monomer being anionically polymerized. In the examples the following block polymer oil-additives are specified: (1 and 2) block polymers of 2-vinyl pyridine and lauryl methacrylate, (3) a block polymer of 4-vinyl pyridine and lauryl acrylate, (4) a block polymer of 2-vinyl pyridine and an ethylene-propylene copolymer, and (5) a cetylated block polymer of 2-vinyl pyridine and alpha-methylstyrene.ALSO:Oil-soluble block polymers are made from monomers having oil solubilizing groups or from which blocks with oil-solubilizing properties can be prepared, and vinyl N-heterocyclic monomers containing 5 or 6 membered rings, at least the polar monomer being anionically polymerized. In the examples, block polymers are made by: (1) and (2) the sequential polymerization of 2-vinylpyridine and lauryl methacrylate using tetrameric sodium alpha-methyl styrene as initiator, (3) the sequential polymerization of 4-vinylpyridine and lauryl acrylate using cumyl potassium as initiator, (4) by contacting a chlorinated ethylene-propylene copolymer with a solution of the polymeric anion made by polymerizing 2-vinyl pyridine with cumyl potassium as initiator, and (5) by the sequential polymerization of alpha-methyl-styrene and 2-vinylpyridine using tetrameric sodium alpha - methylstyrene as initiator, followed by the alkylation of the product with cetene-1.

    • 1352289 Oxidized ethylene/propylene copolymers LUBRIZOL CORP 7 Sept 1972 [16 Sept 1971] 41574/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division C5] Oil-soluble, oxidized, degraded ethylene/ propylene copolymers which cause substantially no increase in the fluidity of fuel oil at -20‹ C. when dissolved therein at a concentration of 0À02 weight per cent are prepared by oxidizing and degrading an ethylene/propylene copolymer having a molecular weight of at least 1000 by contacting with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature of at least 100‹ C. in the presence of a minor amount of an aliphatic amine and for a time sufficient to effect a reduction in molecular weight of at least 5%. The copolymer may also contain up to 10 weight per cent of higher mono olefins and/or conjugated or non-conjugated dienes. The copolymer may be treated with oxygen, air or a mixture of oxygen with an inert gas while dissolved in an inert solvent. In examples mineral oil solutions of ethylene/propylene, ethylene / propylene / dicyclopentadiene and ethylene / propylene / 5 - ethylidene norbornene copolymers are blown with air at 150- 160‹ C. in the presence of C 11 -C 14 t.alkyl primary amines. The products are useful as viscosity modifiers in lubricating oil compositions.

    • 1,246,585. Olefin copolymers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 11 Dec., 1969 [19 Dec., 1968; 25 Nov., 1969], No. 60492/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C5] An oil-soluble, substantially linear, hydrocarbon copolymer containing, on a weight basis, 25 to 55% polymerized ethylene units and 75 to 45% polymerized comonomer units, the comonomer being a terminally unsaturated C 3 - C 12 straight chain monoolefin, a C 9 -C 10 #- phenyl-1-alkene, 2-norbornene, a terminally unsaturated C 5 -C 8 non-conjugated diolefin, dicyclopentadiene, 5-methylene-2-norbornene or a mixture of two or more thereof, the copolymer having a pendent index of 18 to 33, an average pendent size not exceeding 10 carbon atoms, an average chain length of 2700 to 8800 carbon atoms, an inherent viscosity of 0À7 to 1À8 as measured on a 0À1 weight per cent solution in tetrachloroethylene at 30‹ C. is used as a viscosity index improver. Specific examples describe the preparation of ethylene/propylene, ethylene/propylene/1,4-hexadiene, and ethylene/ hexene copolymers.
