    • 1303318 Bituminous binder SOC NATIONALE DES PETROLES D'AQUITAINE 7 April 1970 [9 April 1969] 16508/70 Heading C3N A bituminous binder suitable for use in road construction materials comprises bitumen, previously plasticized sulphur and optionally fluxing oil, wherein the plasticized sulphur amounts to 1-50% of the total weight of plasticized sulphur and bitumen. Preferably the previously plasticized sulphur contains 9-67% by weight plasticizer. The fluxing oil when present preferably comprises 1-12% by weight of the binder. The plasticizing agent for the sulphur may be a cyclic or acylic polysulphide containing aliphatic etheroxide chains linking the sulphur atoms with one another; a polythiomethylene alkanol; or a product of the reaction of sulphur and dithiols. These plasticizers may be modified by vinyl compounds, e.g. a vinyl aromatic compound. A preferred binder composition contains 97% by weight of a bitumen with a penetration rating ranging from 40-50 to 100-220 and 3% by weight of plasticized sulphur. The binder composition may be prepared by adding 100 parts by weight of molten sulphur to 10 parts by wight plasticizer, and then mixing the plasticized sulphur mass thus obtained with 3560 parts by weight bitumen at a temperature of 160-220‹ C., preferably 180-220‹ C. A bituminous concrete may be provided by mixing 6 parts by weight of the bituminous binder and 100 parts by weight of gravel of suitable grading. Optionally an agent for improving the adhesion of the bituminous binder and the gravel may be added.

    • 1302276 Bituminous composition INTERNATIONALE INDUSTRIEBEVORDERING NV and TECHNISCHE INDUSTRIEBERATUNG GmbH 26 March 1970 [28 March 1969] 14823/70 Heading C3N An adhesive for use in the preparation of asphalt-reinforcing materials comprises bitumen or a mineral wax, an organic solvent, an emuisifier, and an aromatic hydrocarbon resin having an aromatic content of less than 5% by weight, the molecules of the aromatic constituents of the said resin having, on average 3-4 fused rings, the rings carrying aliphatic side-chains each having up to 4 carbon atoms. The bitumen preferably has a penetration value of 50-220. The emulsifier is preferably nonionic, e.g. an ethoxylated fatty alcohol or an ethoxylated vicinus oil, whilst the solvent is preferably ethyl acetate. The weight ratio of bitumen to aromatic resin is preferably at least 1:12. A most suitable adhesive comprises 10-60% by weight of aromatic hydrocarbon resin, more than 30% by weight organic solvent, at least 5% by weight bitumen and at least 1% by weight emulsifier. The adhesive may be produced by melting together the aromatic resin and bitumen, whereupon ethyl acetate and emulsifier are added and the mixture is then allowed to cool with stirring. Reinforcing material such as filaments, loose fibres, multifilaments, small bands, knittings or fabrics of materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene, a polyamide, glass or polyesters may be impregnated by applying the adhesive of the invention and evaporating off the solvent. This impregnated material may then be incorporated into a conventional asphalt mixture consisting of 42% by weight sand (max. size 3 mm.), 53% by weight gravel (3-8 mm.), 5% by weight limestone meal and based on the total mineral 6% by weight bitumen.
