The products may be cured and compounded with elastomers. They may also be reacted with aldehydes. In examples, typical monomers of the above formula used are vinyl ethynyl phenol, 1 - hydroxy - phenyl - 1,1 - dimethylpent - 4 - ene - 2 - yne, 1 - (m - methyl - phydroxyphenyl) - 1,1 - dimethyl - pent - 4- ene - 2 - yne, 1 - hydroxyphenyl - 1 - cyclohexyl - pent - 4 - ene - 2 - yne, and epoxidized 1 - hydroxy phenyl - 1 - methyl - 1 - ethyl - pent - 4 - ene - 2 - yne, which are homopolymerized or copolymerized with methacrylic acid, 2-vinyl pyridine, acrylonitrile, maleic anhydride or a mixture of butadiene and styrene in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, azobisisobutyronitrile, diazoaminobenzene, or potassium persulphate/dimethylaniline /sodium alkylnaphthalene sulphonate, and cured in the presence of hexamethylenetetramine or a reaction product thereof with vinyl ethynyl phenol or derivative, urotropin, paraform, formalin, acetaldehyde or maleic anhydride; 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-hept-4-yne-6-ene is condensed with acrolein in the presence of p-toluene sulphonic acid and cured using benzyl or dicumyl peroxide, and a condensation product of a vinyl ethynyl phenol derivative, and furfural mixed with elastomer and cured with dicumyl peroxide. Blends are formed of some of the polymerization and condensation products with butadiene/nitrile, butadiene/styrene and chloroprene rubbers.

    • 1365213 Resorcinol/formaldehyde/sulphur monochloride polycondensate; and adhesives prepared therefrom SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd and BRIDGESTONE TIRE CO Ltd 27 April 1972 [30 April 1971] 19714/72 Headings C3R and C3P [Also in Division B5] A polycondensate is prepared by reacting resorcinol, sulphur monochloride and formaldehyde in a water-immiscible organic solvent, using 0À05-0À15 mol. of sulphur monochloride and 0À4-0À6 mol. of HCHO per mol. of resorcinol. The solvent may be an aromatic hydrocarbon, a ketone or an ester. In a preferred method the resorcinol and SCl are first reacted at 30-120‹ C. and HCHO is then added at 50- 150‹ C. Alternatively, resorcinol and HCHO may be first condensed together and then reacted with SCl. In the test example a composition comprising an aqueous solution of the resorcinol/ HCHO/SCl condensate, aqueous NH 3 and a resorcinol-HCHO-latex solution (RFL) using as latex a styrene-butadiene-vinylpyridine copolymer, is used as an adhesive for bonding polyester tyre cord to rubber. Uses.-Adhesive for bonding natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic fibres and metals to rubber.
