    • 1351368 Substantially monomer free styrene copolymer dispersions WACKER-CHEMIE GmbH 10 Nov 1971 [9 Dec 1970] 52173/71 Heading C3P Substantially monomer free dispersions of copolymers of 20-70% by wt. styrene and 80-30% by wt. of copolymerizable monomers of which 40-100% comprises at least one aliphatic C 1-18 alcohol ester of acrylic acid and 0-60% comprises at least one aliphatic C 1-18 alcohol diester of an α,#-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, are made by a process in which the monomers are radically polymerized at 0-100‹ C. in the presence of at least one emulsifier and/or protective colloid and wherein, after the residual monomer has dropped to less than 3% by weight (based on total monomer), an amount of 0À2- 10% by wt. (based on the polymer) of a vinyl ester of a C 1-3 carboxylic acid is added to the dispersion which has been made to have a pH of 3-7, and the mixture is after polymerized at 50-100‹ C. Vinyl acetate is the preferred vinyl ester, but vinyl formate and propionate may also be used. The initial dispersion polymerization is of the well known type and lists of known emulsifiers, protective colloids and initiators are given. In the stage when the vinyl ester is added, it may be necessary to add further initiator, but this is not always so. The polymer may also contain up to 5% by wt. (based on total monomers) of a water soluble α,#-unsaturated monomer such as acrylic or methacrylic acids or their salts, acrylamide, methacrylamide and their N-methylol derivatives, vinylsulphonic acid, and fumaric, maleic or itaconic acid or their semi esters or amides. The polymers are odourless and suitable for use in paints, as binders, coating materials and many other applications. In the examples, butyl acrylate, 2- ethylhexyl acrylate, propyl acrylate and diethylhexyl fumarate are copolymerized with styrene, and two or more of vinylsulphonate, acrylic acid and acrylamide, except in Example 11. All examples utilize vinyl acetate, except example 7 which uses vinyl propionate.
