    • 1,234,034. Crosslinking polymers. MIDLAND SILICONES Ltd. 19 Sept., 1968 [31 Aug., 1967], No. 39846/67. Heading C3P. Organic polymers are crosslinked by mechanical working to induce the formation of free radical sites in the presence of at least one organosilicon compound containing at least one silicon-bonded hydrolysable atom or radical and at least one silicon-bonded atom or radical reactive with free radical sites, and exposing the polymer to moisture. The working may be supplemented by incorporating a free radical generator, e.g. an organic peroxide or azobisnitrile. Specified polymers are hydrocarbon and halogenated hydrocarbon polymers, polyacrylates, polysulphides, polyamides, polyesters, aminoplasts and epoxides. The silicon compound may contain halogen atoms or alkoxy, oximo, acyloxy or amino radicals; and olefinically unsaturated radicals. Unsaturated organic compounds, e.g. methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and maleic anhydride, and silanol condensation catalysts, e.g. organic metal compounds, bases and acids, and polyfunctional silicon compounds such as tetraalkyl silicates, may also be present. Examples describe the crosslinking of compositions comprising dibutyl tin diacetate with (1) polyethylene and vinyltriethoxysilane, together with (2, 4 and 5) dicumyl peroxide and (3) benzoyl peroxide and tetraethyl orthosilicate; and comprising dibutyl tin diacetate and 8-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane with (6) a polyacrylate, (7) polyvinyl chloride and methyl methacrylate and (8) ABS terpolymer and methyl methacrylate.

    • Treatment of an aqueous medium is attained by adding to said aqueous medium 0.5 to 500 ppm of a copolymer containing at least one of each of the following three monomers: (a) monounsaturated carboxylic acids as well as salts and anhydrides thereof, the acids containing 3 to 5 carbon atoms, such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic acid or its anhydride; (b) acrylamidoalkane sulfonic acids and salts thereof, such as 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid; and (c) primary copolymerizable monomers selected from acrylamides, alkyl acrylates, vinyl sulfonic acid and salts thereof, hydroxyalkyl acrylates, styrene sulfonic acids and salts thereof, allyloxy hydroxyalkane sulfonic acids and salts thereof, and vinyl carboxylates, and hydrolyzed vinyl carboxylates. Addition of the copolymer to said aqueous medium results in one or all of the following: inhibition of scale formation, metal ion stabilization, and dispersion of particulate matter.
