    • A dry non-adhesive powder comprises particles constituted by a core made up of 30-10% by wt. of elastomer and 70-0% of a hard polymer (i.e. a polymer not having rubbery characteristics whose latex can be coagulated to give a non-tacky powder), carrying an outer layer made up of a hard polymer is claimed which may be prepared by coagulating with agitation a latex whose solids comprise the above elastomer and adding to the coagulate, while agitating it, a latex of the above hard polymer containing a weight of that polymer which is 0.5-25% of the wt. of the solids from the first coagulated latex, permitting the second mentioned latex to coagulate on the former coagulate, separating the resultant solid from the aqueous phase and drying the solid. The elastomer may be a copolymer of vinyl acetate (45-95% by wt.) and ethylene, polybutadiene, a copolymer of butadiene with methyl methacrylate, styrene and/or acrylonitrile, polyisoprene and/or polychlorobutadiene. The hard polymer may be polyvinyl chloride, polymethyl methacrylate or polystyrene. The coagulant may be an aq. solution of Al2(SO4)3. 16H2O.ALSO:Particles comprising 30-100% by wt. of an elastomerand 70-0% of a hard polymer (i.e. a polymer not having rubbery characteristics whose latex can be coagulated to give a nontacky powder) which have been produced by coagulating with agitation a latex of the above particles, are coated by adding to the above coagulate while agitating it, a latex of the above hard polymer containing a weight of that polymer which is 0.5-25% of the wt. of the above particles, permitting the second mentioned latex to coagulate on the former coagulate, separating the resultant solid from the aqueous phase and drying the solid. The elastomer may be a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethylene, polybutadiene, a copolymer of butadiene with methyl methacrylate, styrene and/or acrylonitrile, polyisoprene and/or polychlorobutadiene. The hard polymer may be polyvinyl chloride, polymethyl methacrylate or polystyrene.

    • 1443774 Coated rubber surface EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 14 Jan 1974 [9 Feb 1973] 6445/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A polyurethane paint or an acrylic paint is applied to a rubber surface which is either (1) rubber derived from a composition comprising 30-100 parts by weight per hundred parts of rubber of halogenated butyl rubber which has been cured using a metal oxide or halide (especially an oxide, chloride or bromide of zinc or tin) in the presence of an alkyl phenol polysulphide and/or a non-reactive phenolaldehyde resin (a number of which are specified), or (2) a blend comprising an. ethylenepropylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM rubber) and a halogenated rubber cured with sulphur or a sulphur-containing vulcanising agent using a metal oxide or halide in the presence of a non-reactive phenol-aldehyde resin. Composition (1) may be of chlorinated or brominated butyl rubber (as defined below) or blends thereof with natural rubber, styrene-'butadiene rubber (SBR), EPDM rubber, polybutadiene, acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, polychloroprene, polyisoprene or chlorosulphonated polyethylene and particular compositions comprise (by weight) 80 parts of chlorobutyl rubber and 20 parts of natural rubber; 35 parts of chlorobutyl rubber, 25 parts of natural rubber, 25 parts of SBR and 15 parts of EPDM; and 50 parts each of chlorobutyl rubber and EPDM. The diene monomer of the EPDM may be 1, 5- hexadiene, 1, 5-octadiene, or methylidine or ethylidene norbornene. Composition (2) may comprise 70% by weight EPDM and 30% chlorobutyl rubber or a blend of EPDM with polychloroprene or chlorosulphonated polyethylene. The rubber, which may be a radial tyre sidewall formulation, may be cleaned with a hexane solvent before painting. The "butyl rubber" to be halogenated for use in composition (1) comprises 85-99.9 wt. % of a C 4-8 iso-olefin such as isobutene and 0.1-15 wt. % of a C 4-14 multi-olefin such as butadine, dimethylbutadiene, piperylene or isoprene. The rubber compositions may also include various carbon blacks, clays, silicas, carbonates, oils, resins, waxes and conventional curing agents.
