    • 1335306 Oxidative dehydrocyclization of imines SNAM PROGETTI SpA 1 Nov 1971 [2 Nov 1970] 50734/71 Heading C2C Heterocyclic compounds containing a nitrogen atom in its heterocyclic ring are produced by the oxidative dehydrocyclization of an imine in a process which comprises reacting (a) oxygen or a gaseous mixture including oxygen and (b) an imine having the general formula wherein R is H or an alkyl, alkenyl or aryl radical; and each of A and B which may be the same or different, is an alkyl, alkenyl or aryl radical or an alkaryl radical selected from methylphenyl or ethylphenyl with the proviso that at least one of the radicals A and B contains at least 2 C atoms; and wherein the radicals A, B and R are optionally substituted; the reaction being carried out at 300 to 800‹ C. The reaction may be carried out at a pressure of from a few mm Hg to 10 atmospheres and also in the presence of a catalyst selected from silica, alumina, silica-alumina; silico aluminates, oxides or oxide mixtures of alkali or alkaline earth metals and oxides, oxide mixtures or compounds of other elements selected from any one of Groups III to VIII of the Periodic Table. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a diluent inert to the reaction and selected from N 2 , A, CO 2 , steam, C 6 H 6 and saturated hydrocarbons stable under the reaction conditions. The gaseous mixture containing oxygen is preferably air. Examples relate to the preparation of 2 methyl indole from N-isopropylidene-aniline, 2-phenylindole from N-(α-methyl benzal) aniline, 2-phenyl indole from N-benzal-o-toluidine, 2,3-di-methyl indole from N-(α-methylpropylidene)aniline, phenanthridine from N-benzalaniline, 2-methylquinoline from N-isopropylideneo-toluidine, 2-phenylquinoline from N-(α-methylbenzal)o-toluidine, isoquinoline from N-benzalethyl amine and pyridine from N-ethylidenepropylamine or from N-propylidene-ethylamine.
