    • The invention concerns an online method and system for monitoring properties of an aqueous stream of an industrial process. The method comprises providing an initial aqueous stream originating from said process, the aqueous stream containing solid matter exhibiting a first settling behavior; adding modifying agent to the initial aqueous stream at an addition rate sufficient to provide a modified aqueous stream containing solid matter exhibiting a second settling behavior different from the first settling behavior; conducting a sample of the initial aqueous stream or modified aqueous stream, any combination stream comprising the modified aqueous stream or any substream of the modified aqueous stream batchwise from a sampling point to a settling vessel having a volume; and measuring the settling behavior of the solid matter in the sample locally in the settling vessel as a function of time. The invention can be used for efficient monitoring and, optionally, controlling the degree of agglomeration of pulp and paper or board manufacturing processes.

    • A granular chemical dispenser (1) is provided, comprising a conduit (2) providing an open ended liquid flow passage, and subsidiary inlet (21) and outlet (3) openings to and from the conduit spaced apart along its length. The dispenser includes means for introducing an area (22) of low pressure at the subsidiary inlet, with the subsidiary outlet opening into a vented chamber connected to a mixing chamber (9) having a dosing compartment (15) opening into the top of the mixing chamber. The dispenser further includes ganged valves (13,14) for controlling an inlet (25) and an outlet (12) to and from the compartment, with the mixing chamber having an outlet (19) connected to the conduit subsidiary inlet. Means for operating the ganged valves on liquid flow through the passage and reversing this operation on the cessation of flow through the passage is further provided. The dispenser further includes a drying arrangement (27) within or proximate the dosing compartment for keeping air within the dosing compartment and mixing chamber dry, so as to prevent the granular chemical from clogging within the dosing compartment prior to the granular chemical mixing with the liquid flowing through the dispenser.
