    • A disposable liquid sterilizer unit incorporating an ultra-violet tube designed to generate radiation at approximately 2537 Angstroms. The unit comprises an elongated cylindrical plastic jacket opaque to ultra-violet radiation concentrically mounted about the tube to provide a chamber between the jacket and the tube for the flow of liquid to be exposed to radiation generated by the tube. The tube extends beyond the ends of the jacket and includes electrical connectors at each end for removably mounting the unit to make electrical connection with electrical connections in a casing. A seal is provided adjacent each end of the jacket against liquid flow from the chamber between the tube and the walls of the jacket to the exterior of the jacket. Inlet and outlet connections for the flow of water to and from the chamber are provided as well as a viewport through the plastic jacket. The jacket includes a central portion and two integral injection moulded end portions fixed to the central portion by an adhesive. The moulded end portions include the inlet and outlet connections. The complete unit can be readily removed from the casing and disposed of when the tube is defective or worn out. One circuit arangement provides a visual warning, while another prevents the flow of liquid past the tube when insufficient current to achieve sterilization is flowing through the tube.

    • A filtration system is provided that directs a fluid to be filtered through a disposable tubular filtration element, supports the filtration element, and accommodates for "wet growth" of the filtration element. The system operates with an inside-to-outside forced fluid flow through the filtration element and includes a generally cylindrical housing with a fluid inlet and outlet. A perforated outer support screen is mounted within the housing and surrounds the walls of the tubular filtration element with slight clearance. Under the influence of the fluid pressure and the wet growth, the walls of the filtration element bear against the screen. A sealing and support assembly having upstream and downstream fluid guides, each carrying, in a preferred form, a pair of resilient sealing members, is positioned inside the filtration element. A rigid inner member bridges the opposing faces of the resilient member pairs. A rod and nut arrangement draws the flow guides towards one another to apply a longitudinal compressive force on the resilient members caught between a flange on the flow guides and the rigid inner member. This compressive force deforms the resilient members in a radially outward direction to seal the filtration element to the housing and isolate the filtered fluid. In a preferred form, the adjacent faces of each pair of resilient members are aligned with the interior edge of an impregnated end portion of the filtration element. In addition, a tubular prefiltration element may be positioned inside the rigid inner member.

    • A method is provided for continuously filtering liquids containing microorganisms, macromolecules and/or fine particles of solid matter as substances to be filtered out and collecting the substances that are filtered out. The liquid to be filtered is introduced from the top into an upright sieve basket where the filtrate is separated from the substances to be filtered out. A pressure is exerted on the liquid in the sieve basket by pressing means so that the filtrate leaves the sieve basket and the entire surface of the cake formed from the filtered-out substances always has approximately the same height in the sieve basket. The liquid in the sieve basket is pressed under an increasable counterpressure into the space underneath the pressing means in the sieve basket. When the backpressure of the liquid is higher than the pressure of the pressing means on the liquid, the pressing means is lifted a small distance above the cake in the sieve basket.The apparatus for practicing the method includes a housing, and a sieve basket which is mounted in the housing, with the sieve basket being open at its top and bottom and situated on or closely above a cover for the housing. An axially movable disc is mounted in the sieve basket and divides the sieve basket into a lower chamber, which receives the liquid to be filtered, and an upper chamber, which is sealed from the lower chamber. An inlet line is provided into the housing and is connected to at least one bore in the disc to bring the liquid to be filtered into the lower chamber. Force applying means acts on the disc and together with the disc constitute a pressing means which exerts pressure on the liquid in the lower chamber of the sieve basket.
