    • A damping device for elevators, wherein the rolling of a cage which occurs due to the driving thereof by the deflection and joint clearances of guide rails (2) during the movements of the cage is detected by an acceleration sensor (11) attached to the interior of the cage (6), and control input of an actuator (16) which offsets the acceleration is computed by the controller (18) and inputted to the actuator. Consequently, a multilayer piezoelectric element (8f) in the actuator is displaced by an amount corresponding to the level of the input thereinto, to cause the cage (4) to be displaced in the direction in which the rolling of the cage is offset, and minimize the force applied to the cage. Thus, the rolling of the cage is reduced, and the riding comfort is improved.
