    • A method and apparatus for guiding a driverless vehicle along a path defined by a guide cable carrying a current in a horizontal road surface includes mounting a first coil, having a major coil axis, at +45 degrees relative to the horizontal on said vehicle, mounting a second coil, having a major coil axis, at -45 degrees relative to the horizontal on said vehicle such that the axes of said first and second coils intersect, sensing both the radial and circular field vectors of the electromagnetic field with each coil, comparing the magnitude of the radial vector with the magnitude of the circular vector for each coil whereby the lateral position of the intersection point of the axes of the coils is determined relative to the guide cable to indicate the lateral displacement of the vehicle relative to said path, and using the displacement information in the vehicle steering system.

Or, if the piston is pulled outwardly of the cylinder by cab bounce, oil can flow from the rod end of the cylinder via the passage to the base end of the cylinder.

    • In accordance with the present invention, a vehicle steering column (10) is designed to provide a modular quick-connect to a vehicle electronic system (12) and a vehicle steering mechanism (14). A steering wheel (36) is connected to a clock spring (34) in a known manner thereby providing electronic communication with the steering wheel (36). An electronic conduit (36) extends along the length of the steering column (10) and is preferably constructed of a rigid material. The electronic conduit (26) includes a first end and a second end for providing electronic communication from the clock spring (34) to the vehicle electronic system at an end of the steering column (10) opposite the steering wheel (36). A first cylindrical extension (44) extends from the steering wheel (36) and connects the steering wheel (36) to the vehicle steering mechanism (14). The first cylindrical extension (44) contains a first end (86) configured as a male or female fitting. A second cylindrical extension (46) extends from the steering mechanism (14) for connection with the first cylindrical extension (44), whereby the second cylindrical extension includes a second end (90) formed as a male or female fitting, opposite and complementary to the fitting of the first end (86) of the first cylindrical extension (44). By mating the first end (86) with the second end (90), the first and second extensions (44) and (46) are mechanically coupled in a lock and key configuration. The electronic conduit (26) is fixed to the first cylindrical extension (44) whereby the second electronic connector (22) is longitudinally oriented along the first cylindrical extension (44) to provide simultaneous electronic and mechanical connection as the first cylindrical extension (44) is mated with the second cylindrical extension (46).

    • An energy management system and device for use in an automotive frame, rail, or other structural component of an automotive vehicle. The frame or rail having a cavity or exposed surface capable of supporting at least one member. A reinforcing material, such as a polymer-based expandable material, is disposed along the exterior portion of a member prior to final assembly of the vehicle by the vehicle manufacturer. The system is activated as the vehicle undergoes the final vehicle assembly process and paint operation which activates and transforms the reinforcing material to expand, bond and structurally adhere the frame rail to mange, direct, and/or absorb energy in the event of an impact to the vehicle from an applied load or an external force.

    • The invention relates to a power transmission of a turning-track track-laying vehicle. The track-laying vehicle comprises such a closed-loop type track belt (10) arranged between end rolls or similar (11, 12) in such a way that one edge of the track belt can be stretched and the other edge of the track belt contracted in order to make the vehicle execute a turn. The vehicle comprises a motor (26), a traction sprocket or sprockets (30), and power transmission equipment between the traction sprocket or sprockets (30) and the motor (26). The drive sprocket or sprockets (30) are positioned above the top run of the track belt (10), preferably sideways in its middle range.
