    • An apparatus 10 for venting an inflatable restraint assembly 12. The apparatus 10 includes a conventional pyrotechnic cylinder 30 which is communicatively coupled to a controller 28, a selectively pivotable door 32 which selectively seals and/or covers an opening 33 within assembly 12, and a latch mechanism 34 which is coupled to the cylinder 30 and which selectively engages and disengages door 32. Controller 28 is communicatively coupled to a seat position sensor 36, seat belt sensor 38 and crash severity sensor(s) 40. Controller 28 determines when a crash situation has occurred or will imminently occur and selectively activates assembly 12 if such a determination is made, thereby protecting the vehicle occupant 18 from harm and/or injury. Controller 28 further determines whether and/or when to vent air bag module 12 based upon the data received from sensors 36-40 and selectively activates cylinder 30 in response to such a determination.

    • An air bag module includes an air bag and an inflator being activatable to discharge inflator gas for inflating the air bag. The inflator has at least one discharge port through which inflator gas is discharged. A housing includes at least one inflator vent opening aligned with the discharge port. A variable inflation device is mounted on the inflator and includes a movable member alignable with the vent opening. The movable member is movable relative to the vent opening for opening and closing the vent opening at a predetermined time during inflator activation to control the amount of inflator gas discharged into the air bag and the amount of inflator gas expelled out through the vent opening of the housing. Preferably, the variable inflation device includes an initiator device being activatable during activation of the inflator to move the movable member relative to the vent opening at the predetermined time during inflator activation.

The inflator includes a toroidal main body having a front side portion with a gas outlet and a rear side portion, a first flange extending from an outer periphery of the main body and fixed to the retainer, a second flange extending from an inner periphery of the main body to which the inner bag is fixed, and an air vent hole for providing a communication between the front side portion and the rear side portion. The gas from the inflator is supplied between the inner and outer bags.

    • An airbag apparatus configured so that an amount of gas introduced into an airbag is varied by shifting the position of a closing member to open vent openings. The apparatus includes a mechanism for preventing gas generated by a gas generator from leaking through the vent openings when the closing member is closed. A base of the airbag is clamped between a heat shield plate and a retainer. The retainer includes vent openings and the base of the airbag covers the vent openings. The heat shield plate has openings corresponding to the vent openings for allowing gas to flow out of the retainer. The closing member has a plurality of openings, for allowing the gas to flow out, at the same disposing interval as that of the vent openings. When the airbag is not inflated, the openings are positioned so as to be out of line with the vent openings.

    • A venting arrangement for an inflatable curtain cushion is disclosed. The inflatable curtain cushion includes a pair of fabric layers that are themselves gas permeable. The fabric layers have an impermeable coating on the interior surface of fabric layers. One or more vents are provided by bonding a portion of the fabric layers together at the impermeable coating. Separation of the bonded fabric layers causes delamination of the coating from one of the fabric layers. Exposure of the underlying permeable fabric allows venting of inflation gas. The bonded fabric layers separate when gas pressure within the inflatable curtain cushion exceeds a threshold pressure. The number and size of the vents can vary depending upon the permeability of the underlying fabric layer and the desired deflation rate.

In case a collision speed is small or the passenger is relatively small, the passenger can be received by the air bag with a soft touch. In case the collision speed is large or the passenger is large, the passenger can be securely received by the first and second chambers.
