    • A window assembly for a public transportation vehicle that permits rapid removal and replacement is disclosed. The vehicle has a sidewall with a window opening. One or more frame members are attached within the window opening. The frame members are adapted to comprise one or more apertures. One or more retainers are adhesively attached to the inner surface and towards the outer periphery of a piece of glazing. The retainers have protrusions that can extend through the apertures in the frame members and engage therewith when the piece of glazing is positioned adjacent to the window opening. Removable fasteners can be attached to the protrusions so as to detachably secure the piece of glazing and the retainers to the frame members. This allows easy removal and replacement of the piece of glazing from the window opening of the sidewall of the vehicle.

    • A window assembly for a mass transit vehicle adapted to receive a transparent protective member to be positioned adjacent an inner surface of a piece of window glazing by a set of retaining brackets that provide rapid removal of the member without having to remove the retaining brackets. The retaining brackets enclose all four edges of the vehicle window glazing and incorporate a defined space between the window glazing an the inner surface of the retaining brackets. The protective member is positioned within the defined space and can be moved between a secured position and a release position.

    • In certain example embodiments, a single type of vehicle frame member may be used for both first and second vehicle types, where the frame member includes at least one window frame opening defined therein. In making the first vehicle type, the window frame opening(s) is/are filled with windows in a known manner. When making the second vehicle type, one or more of the frame openings is/are filled with a colored polymer based insert which is of a color(s) which compliments the exterior color(s) of the vehicle. In other example embodiments (which may or may not be used in conjunction with the aforesaid embodiment), an attachment member for mounting an insert in a frame opening is designed to allow at least part of the attachment member to slide relative to an insert to which it is mounted. In certain instances, the attachment member may include a spring biased clip, while in other instances it may include a slidable stud support.

    • A mounting assembly for a first ornamental molding 2, comprises a second molding 10 independent of the first ornamental molding 2 and integrally fixed to and along the periphery of a window glass 1, and a molding clip 6 for holding the first molding 2. The molding clip 6 is fixed to the second molding 10 upon a molding process of the second molding. The molding clip 6 includes a body portion 17 defining therein a space for receiving an engagement portion 29 of the first molding, an engagement pawl 18 disposed on the inside of the body portion and adapted to engage with the engagement portion 29 of the first molding, and a flange 19 formed on the outside of the body portion and enclosed in the second molding 10 so as to fix the molding clip 6 to the second molding 10. The molding clip 6 is adapted to be positioned in a gap between the periphery of the window glass and a window frame 11 of a vehicle body by placing the window glass 1 on the window frame 11. The first molding is mounted on the vehicle body by inserting the engagement portion 29 of the first molding into the body portion 17 to bring the engagement portion 29 into engagement with the engagement pawl.

    • A modular vehicle window assembly is provided which has attached thereto interior vehicle accessories. In a preferred embodiment, the window panel assembly includes a window panel disposed within or covering a window opening formed in the vehicle. The window panel may optionally contain a conventional gasket or sealing structure to provide a weather-tight seal in the window opening. Supported on and interconnecting to the interior surface of the window panel are any one of a number of different accessory configurations, including centerline, island, and peninsular overhead consoles providing storage space, overhead lighting, and air conditioning vents for use by the occupants. Other accessories which may be used include an instrument display assembly, a control assembly, a window shade assembly, and a hand-hold assembly. The interior accessories may be interconnected to the window panel by a variety of fasteners which provide the ability to quickly interchange an interior component and/or provide sufficient tensional strength characteristics to suspend the interior accessory from the interior surface of the window panel. Also provided are a perimeter storage and concealment system for providing a finished interior and storage capability about the interior of the window opening. Preferably, the assembly is used in the roof area of the vehicle such that the accessories are supported overhead of the passenger compartment.

    • Disclosed is a window assembly for use in mass transit vehicles which allows the quick and easy removal and replacement of transparent sacrificial glazing panels which protect the glazing of the window from vandalism and wear. The window assembly utilizes a sacrificial protective panel and mounting arrangement which allows quick and easy replacement of protective panels on one or both sides of the window assembly, but inhibits removal by non-maintenance personnel such as vandals. The frame of the window assembly incorporates one or more retainers which fit into slots along the interior sides of the window frame and sandwich the glazing between the frame and the retainers. In turn, the retainers are essentially nulllockednull into position in the frame by an inner protective panel, which significantly inhibits the removal of the retainers from the window assembly when the protective panel is in its desired position against the windowpane. Once the inner protective panel is removed from the window assembly, however, the retainers and glazing can quickly and easily be removed from the frame, allowing the glazing and any remaining protective panels to be quickly and easily removed from the frame. Alternatively, the sacrificial panel may be retained by an integrally formed recess defined by the frame.
