    • A support means supports layers of sheet material which travel in a predetermined path and direction. A working station is located above the support means and comprises a pair of axially parallel rotatable shafts extending transversely of the path, a pair of flange members which are mounted on the respective shaft for rotation therewith and are located in at least substantially parallel spaced planes, and at least one needle carrier mounted between the flange members pivotable with reference to both of them about axes paralleling one another and the shafts. One or more needles are carried by the needle carrier extending radially of the flange members so as to project radially beyond the same and to successively penetrate and withdraw from sheet material beneath the working station in response to the needle carrier approaching and receding from a predetermined angular position relative to the support means. Drive and control means effects advancement of the needle carrier at a circumferential speed which at least approximates the linear speed of travel of the sheet material.

    • A method and apparatus for automated frame assembly, particularly advantageous for use in forming furniture drawers, includes a first bin for storing drawer back portions, situated generally in an elevated position with respect to the rest of the machine, and a pair of opposed bins for storing drawer side portions in serially arranged fashion. A pushing mechanism feeds the drawer back portions one at a time into engagement with one of the serially aligned drawer side portions of each bin. The pushing mechanism, in the same motion, pushes the engaged back and side portions into engagement with a drawer front portion where the side portions are fastened to the drawer front and back portions. Glue is applied to the drawer back portions before they engage the drawer side portions and glue is applied to the drawer side portions before they engage the drawer front portion. The drawer side portion storage bins are automatically refilled when a shortage is detected, by a mechanism which slides a plurality of serially aligned face to face drawer portions into the drawer side portion storage bins. The apparatus is adjustable to produce drawers of different widths and heights and to accept drawer portions of different thicknesses.

    • 1,091,755. Stapling machines. INTERNATIONAL STAPLE & MACHINE CO. March 22, 1966 [April 7, 1965], No. 12608/66. Heading B4C. A staple magazine of a stapling machine is stacked with strips of staples, the uppermost strip being engaged by a spring-pressed plate 25 which is arranged to be swung to a second position as illustrated in Fig. 3 (not shown), to permit loading. The plate 25 is provided with a handle 36 and a slideway 29 for a wire arm 28 pressed downwardly by a pair of torsion springs 31. To raise the plate 25 to its second position, it is pivoted on the wire arm about a pin 27 in a bracket 26 and then pushed towards the stapler post 15 of the machine so that the sides of the plate engage in shoulders 37 and the front of the plate engages under a ledge 35. A pusher plate 39 urges the lowermost strip of staples towards the stapler post by a pair of springs 43 which are attached by pins 47 to a block 41 mounted beneath the pusher plate in a slideway. After the lowermost strip of staples has been exhausted, the pusher plate is withdrawn to allow the stack to move down under the action of the springs 31; if desired, the pusher plate may be held in its retracted position by a pin 54 at the base of the handle. In a modification, Figs. 14-16 (not shown), the plate (25) is provided with a U-shaped bracket (59) having upwardly-projecting legs, each being provided with an L-shaped slot for co-operating with the pivot pin (66) when the plate is moved to its raised position. The stapling machine may be pneumatically-operated and the staples of the type having legs bent at an angle of 15 degrees from the horizontal, Fig. 11 (not shown).
