    • In order to be able to eliminate a mechanical caliper, a bindery line has a plurality of signature feeders or packer boxes each of which is operable to feed a signature therefrom. A collating conveyor passes by each of the signature feeders or packer boxes along a signature conveying path so as to be operable to receive signatures from the signature feeders or packer boxes in collated form for forming a book. A book finishing section is downstream of the signature feeders or packer boxes for forming the book from the signatures received in collated order after the collating conveyor has passed by each of the signature feeders or packer boxes in travel along the signature conveying path. With this arrangement, the invention utilizes detectors for detecting a missing signature, an incorrect signature, a double signature, a conveyor jam, a hanging book, and a long book.

    • A method of combining a number of individually printed products into a finished product, for example a weekend newspaper containing numerous sections. The individually printed products are of the type that are folded at their mid portion so that they can be opened along the fold allowing them to receive other printed product or closed which facilitates their insertion into an opened printed product. The process starts by inserting a folded printed product into the main product. The first inserted product could have been open when inserted or opened after it was inserted. Then another printed product is inserted into the main product such that it lies adjacent to the first product that was inserted. The first product that was inserted into the main product can then be opened to permit additional printed products to be inserted into it.

    • A device is provided for gathering and conveying printed sheets over a conveying path. The device includes a gathering segment, with the legs of the printed sheets straddling the gathering segment. The gathering segment includes a conveyor device having a saddle-shaped support surface for receiving the printed sheets and is adaptable to be loaded by sheet feeders disposed along the gathering segment, and driven carriers disposed on the conveyor device having a guide apparatus to raise at least one leg of at least one of the printed sheets to define first printed sheets without raised legs and a second printed sheets with raised legs. The device further includes a stop apparatus projecting into the conveying path of the second printed sheets and griping the front edges of the second printed sheets, wherein the stop apparatus is adaptable to be shut off when the first printed sheets are conveyed past.

    • A side wire stitching binder includes at least one side wire stitcher for stitching a book through a side of the book, a cover station for applying a cover over a spine of the book, and a clamping device including a clamp for transferring the book from the at least one side wire stitcher to the cover station. Also disclosed is a method for binding a book comprising the steps of clamping an unstitched book with a first clamp, side stitching the book while clamped in the first clamp, and transporting the book to a cover station using the first clamp.

    • Servers (4a, 4b) respectively define printing informations (2b, 3b) inclusive of identifying informations ID1, ID2 of a paper block (2) and a cover (3) whereas printing machines (1a, 1b) respectively perform a printing operation on the paper block (2) and the cover (3). Information readers (6a, 6b) respectively read the printing informations of the paper block (2) and the cover (3) so as to supply the information thus acquired to a book-binding controller (7). Based on either of the informations thus supplied, the book-binding controller (7) supplies a book binding apparatus (20) or (80) with a control signal (CS) of settings for the book binding process. Additionally, the control signal (CS) of the settings for the book binding process is outputted when the ID1 and ID2 are in correspondence. Based on the printing information of the paper block, respective quantities of movement of the laterally movable members (31, 32, 42, 43, 61, 62) are automatically regulated.
