    • In a shared users mailboxing system adapted to receive and stack plural print jobs of plural sheets for plural different recipients in plural mailbox bins, having a preset maximum desired sheet stacking level, with a sheet distribution system controlled by a control system for automatically variably stacking print jobs into different mailbox bins electronically assignable to different recipients, a dual mode bin stacking level indicator system for indicating to the control system when the height of the stack in a bin has reached a preset level. The control system provides a selection between the exclusive assignment of only one recipient to mailbox bins and the shared assignment of plural recipients to mailbox bins. There are two different bin stacking level estimation systems, selectable by the control system, a first sheet thickness and stapling weighted point count stack height estimation system from the sheet input count, used for the exclusive assignment of only one recipient to a mailbox bin, and a second stacking level estimation system utilizing a special physical stack height measurement system where the partial removal of print jobs by shared bin users is allowed.

    • The caliper system in a booklet collating system automatically measures a new zero position before measuring the thickness of a following booklet or booklets to eliminate a zero-offset error otherwise occuring from build-up of ink contaminants on the caliper rollers. The caliper rollers are preferably cylindrical and completely round. A reference roller projects into a window in a skirt of the conveyor. A measuring roller engages the reference roller through the window and is carried on one end of a pivoted, lightweight arm that reduces the inertia required to be moved to effect the measurement. The free end of the arm is coupled by a string-pulley arrangement to a shaft encoder producing electrical position signals corresponding to the movement of the measuring roller caused by the thickness of a booklet between the caliper rollers. The position signals are received by a caliper controller that subtracts the zero position signal from each thickness signal received, usually ten for each book. The high and low differences are disregarded, the remaining eight thickness values are averaged and the controller determines whether the average thickness value represents a properly collated booklet. The controller then effect the binding of properly collated booklets and the rejection of improperly collated booklets.

    • A binding apparatus includes a plurality of feed stations (10, 12, 14) which stack sheets on an inclined conveying surface (16). A conveyor (20) continuously conveys the stacks along a workpath (w) to a stitcher assembly (B). The stitcher assembly includes a frame assembly (100) having a stitcher head mounting bar (130) and a clincher mounting bar (136) on which stitcher heads and clinchers are mounted in cooperative relationship. A power take-off assembly (54) rotates a stitcher assembly transverse drive shaft (250) in coordination with advancement of the conveyor. The stitcher assembly transverse drive shaft rotates lever arms (260, 262) which are connected by connecting links (264, 266) with a stationary structure such that the frame assembly is cyclically reciprocated longitudinally along the workpath. A stitcher head actuating assembly (270) and a clincher actuating assembly (290) are driven by the stitcher assembly transverse drive shaft to cause the mounted stitcher heads and clinchers to be actuated at the same point in each reciprocation cycle. A register or dog member (160) which is connected with the frame assembly for reciprocation therewith engages a trailing edge of each stack and positions it in a selected registration with the stitcher during the stitch insertion. In this manner, a stitch is inserted in the same location in each conveyed stack.

    • A top panel of a copying machine is provided with a tray or like means forming a cavity recessed from bordering top surface areas for collecting staples removed from stapled bundles of originals to be copied, and a rigid finger protrudes freely into the cavity for removing the staple from a bundle of originals suitably placed onto and moved over the appliance. The finger has its top surface largely formed flat and tapered to an upturned narrowed tip that projects slightly above the plane of the adjacent top surface areas. By placing a stapled bundle of sheets on the appliance with the staple located ahead of the finger and the bent-over legs of the staple facing upward and then manually moving the bundle over the finger, the tip of the finger can engage between the staple and the sheets, and upon further movement of the bundle the tapered forward portion of the finger pulls the staple out of the sheets.
