    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper carrying mechanism and image forming apparatus, which enables stable and high-quality printing by eliminating displacement between the upper layer and the lower layer of continuous paper when the continuous paper, in which a plurality of layers are laid one upon the other, is wrapped around a cylindrical platen.SOLUTION: The paper carrying mechanism includes: the platen 11; a carriage unit 20, including a printing head 22 facing the platen 11 and including a protector frame 23 for regulating a carrying passage for continuous paper 15 carried near the printing head 22; a holding means 56 for holding the carriage unit 20 such that the carriage unit 20 is movable in the axial direction of the platen 11; and an idle roller 16, disposed on an upstream side from the carriage unit 20 in the direction in which the continuous paper 15 is carried, and determining the angle at which the continuous paper 15 is wrapped around the periphery of the platen 11 together with the protector frame 23. Further, the holding means is configured to hold the carriage unit 20 such that the carriage unit 20 is rotatable around the shaft of the platen 11.

When fixing is released, the base is constituted to move to a release position dislocated from the operation position. A chip container 15 is constituted so as to be drawn from the inside of the body case, mounted thereto, of the printer to the outside of the body case. When at least one part of the base is intruded into a moving path of the chip container accompanied by drawing at the release position, the chip container includes a regulating member 71 for regulating the movement of the base before the base reaches the release position.

    • A paper-width detecting device includes a paper guide, a conductive element, a circuit board and a control-processing unit. The paper guide is movably disposed on a paper tray for accommodating different sizes of papers. The conductive element attaching to the paper guide and moving simultaneously with the paper guide has a plurality of first conductive portions. The circuit board has a plurality of conductive wires, which is formed by a plurality of separated second conductive portions on the surface of the circuit board. An insulating region is formed between any two adjacent second conductive portions of each conductive wire. The control-processing unit is for providing an electric voltage between the conductive wires and the conductive element. When the paper guide presses against the paper, the control-processing unit generate a paper-width value corresponding to the number of current passages formed between the first conductive portions and the corresponding conductive wire thereof.
