    • The present invention is an apparatus and method for duplex printing of a sheet-like substrate in a continuous single-pass flat printing process. The device comprises a first conveyor unit in communication with a feeder and a second conveyor unit in communication with a delivery. Each conveyor unit has a printing device and a drying/curing device disposed adjacent to the conveyor unit for applying a printed material to the substrate. A transfer device is disposed between the two conveyor units for transferring the substrate from the first conveyor unit to the second conveyor unit and turning the substrate, thereby allowing both sides of the substrate to be printed. Alternative embodiments may include any number of conveyor units and transfer units.

The printing machine, in particular a sheet-fed printing press, has one or more processing stations with cylinders and drums and at least one gear train. The gear train is formed with multiple gear-wheels that drive the cylinders and drums. In a first configuration there is provided an elastic coupling between two equidirectionally rotating gear-wheels. In a second configuration there is provided an elastic crank on a gear-wheel. There is thus impressed onto gear wheel or gear wheels, an additional and variable torque, in addition to the driving-torque of the printing machine.

    • A drive system for use with a printing apparatus is disclosed. The drive system includes a plurality of process units, with each unit being adapted for effecting a respective repeat operation on a web of material fed along a path defined at least in part by the process units. The drive system further includes an electrically powered rotary motor corresponding to each of the process units or to one or more rotary elements within a process unit. A control system operates to regulate the running speed and angular phasing of each of the motors individually in relation to a predetermined master standard programmed into the control system. The control system is adapted to vary the relative phase angles of the outputs of one or more of the rotary motors by a preselected factor proportionate to the overall running speed of the apparatus in order to maintain accurate registration of each of the process units relative to the web material throughout a substantial range of operating speeds.

The convertible cylinder conveys a sheet. The gripper units are arranged on an outer surface of the convertible cylinder and lined up in an axial direction of the convertible cylinder, and grip the sheet. The holding members are arranged on the outer surface of the convertible cylinder to be adjacent to the gripper units, and lined up in the axial direction of the convertible cylinder to be phase-shifted from the gripper units. In single-sided printing, the convey mechanism conveys the sheet fed from an upstream convey cylinder by gripping its leading edge upon opening/closing operation of the gripper units. In double-sided printing, the convey mechanism holds a trailing edge of the sheet, fed from the upstream convey cylinder, with the holding members and thereafter gripping-changes the sheet to the gripping units. The pair of paper guide members are arranged at at least one of a position between the holding members and an outermost position outside the second gripper units, and guide two sides of the sheet conveyed by the holding members to corresponding ones of the gripper units.
