    • A method of continuously forming articles having a predetermined, varying cross sectional geometry which comprises continuously introducing molten thermoplastic material from a die opening into a nip formed by opposing rotating rolls (16,18) with at least one roll (16) having a cooled, arcuate mold cavity (19) in its surface contoured to correspond to each article cross sectional geometry thereby providing varying clearances in the nip, progressively successively arcuately forcing the mold cavity into shaping engagement with the molten thermoplastic material to mold the articles therefrom, maintaining the thermoplastic material containing the articles in contact with one ofthe rolls (16) after exiting the nipthereby forming a first, curved intermediate shape (78) wherein the thermoplastic material is partially set, immediately passing such shape over a cooled cylindrical surface (30) to further yet not completely set the thermoplastic material and transpose the first shape into a second shape reversely configured from the first shape, discharging the second, shape from the cylindrical surface in a substantially planar direction to straighten such shape and transpose the articles into a substantially flat condition while continuing to set the thermoplastic material, and thereafter separating the articles from the remainder of the thermoplastic material.

    • A vacuum molding roll structure for molding in vacuum convex forms on the surface of a film such as a synthetic resin sheet or the like. Recesses corresponding to the convex forms are formed on the outer periphery of the roll. A vacuum passage which communicates with the recesses is formed in the roll through the width of the roll along the axial direction of the roll. A vacuum side plate which supports a roll shaft and is secured to the roll body side is provided at the side face of the roll. This side plate is formed with a groove of an adequate length extending circumferentially of the side plate at the position faced with the vacuum passage. Communicating means for communicating with a vacuum source is provided at the groove. A plane metal formed through the periphery with a hole of substantially the same area as the vacuum passage at the position faced with the vacuum passage is formed between the side face of the roll and the side plate. Only while the roll is rotated so that the groove of the side plate engages the vacuum passage of the roll and the hole in the metal, the vacuum of the vacuum source is led to the recess of the roll to attract the film wound on the roll only during this time so as to form a convex portrusion on the surface of the film.
