    • A process and apparatus for electrically machining an electrode workpiece by means of an electrode tool, in which the electrode workpiece is first machined by EDM by way of electrical discharges occuring across a dielectric fluid. The electrode workpiece is subsequently subjected to a finishing pass in the course of which it is machined by electrochemical machining (ECM) through a conductive electrolyte replacing the dielectric fluid. The machining phase by ECM is effected by means of the same electrode tool or by means of an electrode tool of the same dimensions as is used during the machining phase with EDM. During machining by EDM, the electrode tool is orbited, or translated, in a direction perpendicular to the axis of feed of the electrode tool relative to the electrode workpiece, with an amplitude larger than the amplitude during machining by ECM.

    • A method of machining a metallic workpiece with a worktool by passing an electrolyte in contact with the workpiece; immersing an auxiliary electrode in said electrolyte; providing a reference electrode; applying an electrical potential to the workpiece, in relation to the reference electrode, sufficient to control the mechanical and physical properties of the workpiece without significantly chemically deplating metal from the workpiece; and removing metal from the workpiece principally by the frictional movement of the worktool in direct contact with the workpiece.

    • A metal mold is prepared by an electrical machining process wherein one of a base metal mold and an upper metal mold is electrically shaped by using an electrode having a desired shape on a surface thereof facing the workpiece, and the electrode then is fitted into the shaped metal mold to make a composite electrode of the two, and if necessary, the opposite surface of the electrode is also shaped. The other metal mold is then electrically shaped by using the composite electrode having the desired shape. With this invention, it is possible to provide a metal mold for thin articles, such as plastic articles.
