    • Phenolic antioxidants and stabilisers for polyolefins. M1-. By reacting (I) (in which one X is a hydroxylic group, possibly in the form of a phosphoric ester or acid, and the other X is H or tert. butyl; R1, R2 are H or tert. butyl but at least one is tert. butyl; A is phenyl possibly carrying one or two tert. butyl; (I) contains at least 3 tert. butyl), and (II) a compound capable of producing B-(-Y-B-)n-H (in which B is th residue of (I), n is an integer, Y is one of -S-, -S-S-, -P(or3)-, -P(O)(OR4)-, R5-C(R5)(R6)-where R3, R4 are H, 1-18C alkyl, (methyl) cyclohexyl, C2-6 hydroxyalkyl, alkylene residue of a C2-6 polyol, phenyl, alkylphenyl having a C1-18 alkyl, hydroxyphenyl, phenylene from resorcinol or hydroquinone, (di)hydroxydiphenyl or (di)hydroxydiphenylpropane; R5, R6 are H, C1-4 alkyl or alkylene, or (methyl)cyclohexyl). Generally 0.5 to 1 mole of (II) are used per mole of (I). Specifically (I) is a mixture of isomers from reacting 1 mole of 2- or 4-hydroxy-diphenyl and 1.3 to 2.9 moles of isobutylene, and (II) is from S2Cl2, SOCl2, HCHO and PCl3. The additives have a low volatility and show only slight migration and are added in amts. of 0.05-2% pref. to polypropylene.
