    • A method for performing human isometric exercise includes the steps of sensing an applied force, providing a signal representing the applied force, receiving the signal and comparing the applied force to a preselected force, and providing the result of the comparison to a user in real time. The result of the comparison may be provided in an alphanumeric or other visible display, or by auditory means. The time that force is applied may be compared to a preselected time period, and a message provided to a user to rest when the preselected time period has been reached. The number of repetitions of the application of force during a session may be compared to a preselected number of repetitions, and an indication of session completion provided to a user when the number of completed repetitions equals the preselected number. A device for use in isometric exercise includes a device for sensing an applied force and providing an output signal representing the applied force, electronics for receiving the signal and comparing the applied force to a preselected force, and providing the result of the comparison to a user.

    • A versatile bidirectional isometric exercise device is provided in the form of an inflatable flexible exercise ball (10A-C), about 46 cm (18 inches) in diameter, fitted with a pair of looped handles (12A-B, 30A, 30C), secured to diametrically opposite points of the ball, through which arms or legs can be placed for performing specialized exercises that use the ball (10A-C) in a tension mode. The ball (10A-C) is only partially inflated so as to provide soft compliant accommodation to various body surfaces, and can be utilized bidirectionally, i.e. either in compression or in tension, in conjunction with various body parts such as hands, legs, knees, feet, etc., for a broad array of isometric muscle exercises directed to overall body strengthening, particularly for persons prone to and/or desiring protection from the effects of osteoporosis. A sequence of recommended exercises may be depicted directly on the surface of the ball (10A-C). Attachment of the handles (12A-B) to the main ball portion may be made by sonic welding. In one embodiment an internal bladder (26) is enclosed in a fabric cover, and in one version of this, two hemispheric portions (28A-B) are formed to each provide an integral looped handle (30A, 30C). A pressure gauge and/or user-adjustable alarm indicator may be provided to indicate muscular force applied in either compression or tension.

    • An instrumented orthopedic restraining device is provided. The device includes an ambulatory housing, including first and second distal end portions, and restraining means for restraining movement of the first and second distal end portions relative to one another. The restraining device preferably includes an elongated restraining bar equipped with a stress sensing mechanism for sensing stress on the restraining bar. A control unit is provided for indicating sensed stress based upon outputs from the stress sensing mechanism. Preferred embodiments include a plurality of strain gauges attached to the elongated restraining bar and interconnected with the control unit which preferably includes a recording mechanism and a microprocessor mechanism. The elongated restraining bar alternately includes an adjustable hinge interconnecting distal end sections of the elongated restraining bar, wherein the angle between the respective distal end sections can be adjusted relative to one another. The adjustable hinge is preferably an electromechanical hinge which can be at least partially controlled by software read by the microprocessor mechanism. Methods of using embodiments of the present invention are also disclosed.

    • An exerciser has a hub, a flat strap having one end connected to the hub and adapted to be wound on the hub, a handle connected to an opposite end of the strap for allowing a user to hold the handle to support the hub and a pair of disk-shaped weights connected to opposite sides of the hub. The weights spin in one direction as the hub moves away from the handle and the strap unwinds from the hub, and continue in the same direction as the hub moves toward the handle and the strap winds onto the hub. The weights can each be made of a mounting dish and a plurality of hollow segments each for receiving a pourable material for adding weight to the segments. The segments are engaged to the dish to form a substantially closed disk-shaped weight and knobs are screwed to the hub and over caps for closing the hollow segment for fixing the segments to the dish. The weight can also be used for other exercise devices.
